Autism Month

In order to highlight the growing need for concern and awareness about autism, the Autism Society has been celebrating National Autism Awareness Month since the 1970s. The United States recognizes April as a special opportunity for everyone to educate the public about autism and issues within the autism community.

In the month of April, we had a blue light displayed in our office for the month of April to show our support and awareness of Autism.

In Commemoration of April 24

On April 7th, the sixth, seventh, and eight graders of Pilibos and Ferrahian joined together and visited the Armenian Genocide Monument in Montebello.  As Armenians living in America, both Pilibos and Ferrahian came out to show respect for our ancestors. Visiting the Monument was very important to the students because they were able to somehow honor their ancestors by placing flowers at the foot of the monument and singing and reciting poems depicting their love for their heritage and history.

April 9 Walkathon w

On April 9, the students, teachers, and parents of Pilibos took part  in a walkathon commemorating April 24.  They began the walkathon at St. Mary's Church in Glendale and ended at Pilibos.

w

Students from Kindergarten through 12th grades participated, proud and committed to the Armenian Cause.  At the end of their walk, the participants gathered in the church for prayer for the souls who lost their lives during the genocide.  The day ended with the PTO providing lunch and refreshments for all the participants.

a24April 28 Program

On Thursday, April 28 a crowd of supporting friends, family, students, and administration joined together for Rose and Alex Pilibos's annual Armenian Genocide commemoration. The night began with a candle lighting ceremony and was followed by a brief yet powerful message from the priest.  1st - 12th grade students placed flowers in memory of our ancestors, and a24students from 5th - 12th grade showcased their talents, whether it be singing, reciting poems, or saying a few nice words in memory of our lost ancestors. The keynote speaker was the principal, Mr. Nazo a24Apanian, who shared with the audience the meaning and purpose of the evening. As the night was drawn to an end there was a sense of both pride and sorrow amongst all those who were there.

8th Grade

Washington D.C. Trip

The 8th Grade Class, embarked on their annual Washington D.C. Trip.  They had the opportunity to visit our nation's capital, further learn about its history, and gain experiences and memories that will last them a lifetime.

They visited various memorials, museums, the Naval Academy, the Supreme Court, the Capitol Building, Mount Vernon, the Smithsonian, and even had time for a scenic cruise on the Potomac River.  They also had an opportunity to visit the Armenian Embassy and ANCA headquarters.  At the ANCA headquarters, they took part in a presentation on the Armenian Cause and a series of four mock meetings with the President, the House Speaker, the dcEditor of the Washington Post, and the Secretary of State.  ANCA representatives called our students "remarkable" and were very impressed with their level of knowledge and concern for our cause.

Throughout the trip, our teachers received compliments from government building officials, museum employees, and passersby.  They are commended for their exceptional behavior.

 Counseling Office

Junior's corner

JUNIORS, it is time for you to think about next year. The process starts now by getting prepared to take the SAT I and II if you have not started yet.  If you are planning on applying to any 4 year university (UC, CSU or private), you will need to submit SAT 1 scores. For the UCs and private school, you will also need to take 2 SAT II subject tests. Your SATs should be done by December of 2011. You can log on www.collegeboard.com to get more information about how and when to take the tests.  You can also visit the counseling office for any questions.

By the end of the year we will provide you with your three year transcript if you have attended Pilibos 9-11th grades.  If you have attended other schools in the grades 9th or 10th, please get ready to request your transcripts from your previous schools.  You need to make sure you have taken all the necessary courses required for graduation.   If you are missing a course, this is the time to make it up.  If you are unsure as to what the requirements are, please come to the counseling office and ask.  You should take a look at your transcripts prior to going on summer break because if you have any D's, you will need to make them up, especially if you are planning to apply to ANY 4 year universities (Ds are not a passing mark for universities, even if it is one D, for one semester) You also want to make sure all the grades on your transcripts are accurate because these are the documents that will be sent to the universities after you have applied. DO NOT LEAVE IT FOR THE LAST MINUTE.

The following is the list you need to start putting together:

  • TRANSCRIPT
  • REPORT CARDS
  • INTERNSHIP HOURS
  • EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
  • LIST OF COLLEGES YOU WOULD LIKE TO APPLY
  • LIST OF CAREERS YOU ARE INTERESTED IN

We will meet with all the 2012 seniors over summer break to discuss college preparations. (Date: TBD) Parents are welcome to attend. Keep an eye out for emails/announcements about the meetings.

Environmental Club

 ec                                                                                  Armenia Tree Project Fundraiser

The Rose and Alex Pilibos Environmental Club cooperatively organized a fundraiser to raise money for the Armenia Tree Project.  In October, this organization paid a visit to Rose and Alex Pilibos in order to educate the students about their purpose and goal.

Since 1992, Armenia has been threatened with deforestation, especially after the collapse of the Soviet Union. During this time, Armenians were forced to cut down trees in order to cook and fuel their heating devices. The Armenia Tree Project, established in 1994, is a non-profit organization whose main goal is to plant trees in Armenia to further improve the people's lifestyles. In addition, through planting trees in Armenia, they hope to protect the Environment and help those in need of resources.  The Armenia Tree Project has done a great deal of work by planting over 2,500,000 trees in Armenia. Not only has this been of great importance to the Environment, but it also has increased the jobs in tree restoration programs and organizations. ec

Through dedication and hard work, the Rose and Alex Pilibos Environmental Club raised a considerate amount of money for the Armenia Tree Project. Members of the club sold wristbands with the phrase "Trees Need Love Too" to further emphasize the  importance of trees and the significance of the Armenia Tree Project. After students gained interest in this environmental organization, they were honored and excited to place several donations. This fundraiser gave the Environmental Club the opportunity to take part in helping the Armenia Tree Project.

School-Wide Cleanup ec

After much organization and planning, the Environmental Club, held a school-wide cleanup during Spring Break. The cleanup took place on April 18, 2011 at Rose and Alex Pilibos Armenian School. One week prior to the cleanup, each member was assigned to bring several cleaning supplies such as paper towels, expo cleaners, rags, air fresheners, etc. ec

On the morning of April 18, 2011, members collectively met up and began cleaning the classrooms in which they were assigned. These students cooperatively cleaned the whiteboards, desks, and windows in each classroom. Later, the members scrubbed each bin until it was completely spotless. Though these tasks required hard work and

ec

persistence, they did not give up and continued cleaning.

Not only does the Environmental Club work to help the environment, but it also teaches new members the concept of teamwork, dedication, and leadership.

    Our Environment

During their art class, 5th graders worked on group community projects where they created an environmentally friendly and safe community.  Some students said that they believed they could better their communities by adding more solar powered cars, planting more trees, building more efficient roads, and by recycling more.  In essence they wanted to create a cleaner and safer community.

 4th Grade:

Role Models

The 4th Graders were given an assignment to write about and present to the class their role model.  Students wrote about their favorite athlete, actor, writer, and even parents.  When presenting their assignments, some of them even dressed the part to fully portray who it is that they admire and why.

ASBAREZ

On Thursday, March 23, 2011 the fifth grade class went on a remarkably fun field trip.  They went to Asbarez/Horizon where they learned many new and interesting things. They learned about what kind of stories they put in the newspaper and how many years they have been publishing it. After that, they went to an authentic Armenian restaurant called Aslan.  They ate their yummy food and a short time after some students danced and others sang. They all danced and had an amazing time.  Click here to read the article in Asbarez.

HOLYLAND EXHIBITION

On Tuesday, April 5th the sixth grade classes took a trip to the Holyland Exhibition.  This educational field trip helped students understand different cultures with hands on activities.  The pupils went room to room to look at different artifacts belonging to different religions.  Some students had the opportunity to wear traditional attire pertaining to different cultures.  The trip to the Holyland Exhibition was extremely fun, educational and fascinating.

2010-2011 Yearbooks

The Pilibos Yearbook Committee, comprised of a group of 2011 seniors, is well underway in its efforts to design and complete our 2010-2011 Yearbook.  They are working diligently to create a unique, fun, and memorable yearbook that may be enjoyed for years to come.

In an effort to increase revenue to help our school create an amazing yearbook, this year the committee is including Recognition Ads and Business Advertisements.

Yearbook Recognition Ads are a great way for parents and loved ones to commemorate student achievements and important milestones.  School clubs, organizations, and/or classes can also benefit from these Ads.  They can display their personality, voice, and mark within our school by creating a page that is unique to their club or group.

Businesses can also participate by buying Ad Space for their business cards and/or advertisements.

Your participation would be of great value and appreciated by the Yearbook Committee and our school.  IN ADDITION TO SUPPORTING OUR SCHOOL, YOUR DONATION IS ALSO A GREAT WAY TO RECEIVE A TAX DEDUCTION.

We thank you in advance for your contribution and cannot wait to see what our new yearbook has in store for us all.

Here is an example of a Recognition Ad that many parents can purchase for their son or daughter.
