WASC Accreditation
For the past four days, March 27-30, a team from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) visited our school to renew our term of accreditation. The administration and faculty have been working for the last year and a half to prepare for their visit, examining every aspect of our school and preparing a written report for the WASC team. Everyone worked very hard, and we were prepared for their visit and any questions they might have for us.
The four team members came from all over southern California: San Diego, Etiwanda, Bakersfield, and Glendale. On Sunday, March 27, the team met with the School Board, parents, and faculty. Beginning on Monday, the team members had meetings with the faculty in their various focus groups, talked with the students, and visited every classroom. One member even played some basketball with the high school boys!
Overall, their impressions of our facility, staff, and curriculum were very positive. The chairman of the team praised our school for the unity of our vision; the team was very impressed that everyone-- parents, students, and faculty-- all support the vision and mission of our school. The team members also said that they felt the sense of family and community that is the true heart of Pilibos.
"Thank you to everyone-parents, faculty, students, and staff-who worked so hard to make the WASC visit such a great success," said principal Nazo Apanian.

TECHNOLOGY in ACTION
SMART Board presentations with 3rd, 4th and 5th graders
As we all know by now, Pilibos aquired 2 SMART Boards over the past few months. After a brief training on the equipment and software for the boards, we are excited and frankly, a little overwhelmed to see all the possible uses and purpose these boards can serve for our teachers and students of all learning styles. Combining the simplicity of a whiteboard with the power of a computer, the SMART Board lets you deliver dynamic lessons, write notes in digital ink, and save your work - all with the simple touch of a finger!
The counseling office was given the opportunity to "break" the boards in and use them with the 3rd, 4th and 5th graders during their second workshop on bullying. Maral Tavitian spoke to the students about the difference between tattling and bullying using interactive applications, games, images, and animations on the board. She also gave each student a turn to come up and "interact" with the board through the use of their finger or the magic pens. The presentation seemed to capture the students' attention, kept them engaged and encouraged participation. The counselor will continue to use the boards during the monthly workshops with the students with the hope of implementing it with all other grade levels as well. With endless possibilities, the SMART board is an amazing tool for today's techie kids!

We would sincerely like to thank the Chamlian staff, faculty and most importantly, the students for their hospitality. We look forward to many more shared events in the future!

Field Trips
The Getty:
Excitement was in the air as the 9th graders boarded the school bus and was on their way to The J. Paul Getty Museum. The Getty Center was an ideal field trip for the students that are currently studying art history. They were lucky enough to view a temporary exhibit entitled the "Gods of Angkor: Bronzes from the National Museum of Cambodia," which will only be at the museum for a couple of more months. They were astonished to see actual pieces that were discussed in class, present before their very own eyes. They also had the privilege to view an ancient Armenian text that was a part of the exhibit entitled, "Stories to Watch: Narratives in Medieval Manuscripts." Overall, the trip was a great success, and certainly sparked great appreciation for the arts!
Shakespeare Live:

On March 10th, the eighth grade class, accompanied by Mrs. Carla Kiladjian and Mr. Terry McCrory, took a field trip to Glendale Central Theatre to see Shakespeare Live!, an exciting production that showcases scenes from several of William Shakespeare's plays and lines from his sonnets. The students were very excited! They enjoyed every moment, especially the humorous scenes. They appreciated the small, cozy setting that Glendale Central Theatre provides. Following the production, the students were able to participate in an intimate question-and-answer session with the actors, and several of our students asked very interesting questions! Overall, it was a great experience that will serve as an introduction to the study of Shakespeare for years to come.

Dear Mr. Obama...
The Pilibos 3rd Graders recently wrote letters to Mr. Obama as part of a class project. They mailed out their letters and impatiently awaited their responses. Mr. Obama was kind enough to respond to the students and even sent pictures of him and his family to show his appreciation.

2010-2011 Yearbooks
The Pilibos Yearbook Committee, comprised of a group of 2011 seniors, is well underway in its efforts to design and complete our 2010-2011 Yearbook. They are working diligently to create a unique, fun, and memorable yearbook that may be enjoyed for years to come.
In an effort to increase revenue to help our school create an amazing yearbook, this year the committee is including Recognition Ads and Business Advertisements.
Yearbook Recognition Ads are a great way for parents and loved ones to commemorate student achievements and important milestones. School clubs, organizations, and/or classes can also benefit from these Ads. They can display their personality, voice, and mark within our school by creating a page that is unique to their club or group.
Businesses can also participate by buying Ad Space for their business cards and/or advertisements.
Your participation would be of great value and appreciated by the Yearbook Committee and our school. IN ADDITION TO SUPPORTING OUR SCHOOL, YOUR DONATION IS ALSO A GREAT WAY TO RECEIVE A TAX DEDUCTION.
We thank you in advance for your contribution and cannot wait to see what our new yearbook has in store for us all.
Here is an example of a Recognition Ad that many parents can purchase for their son or daughter.
