Wash, Wash, Wash your Hands...
In February, the Kindergarten classes
had a visit from a
nurse who reviewed
the importance of
good hygiene and how
to properly wash your hands. The kids
had a lot of fun as they learned about what to do and

Generous
Hearts
Our parents and alumni continue to overwhelm us everyday with their generosity and good spirit. Their support and dedication, volunteer efforts for the school, and donations are much appreciated and valued. It is because of such dedication and compassion that we continue to maintain and grow our extended Pilibos Family.
A number of parents donated funds to the school for something as simple as adding cabinets in two of our classrooms, to gifting the school because their son's name was Vartan, in rememberance of St. Varatan.
We thank these parents and those like them who continue to give to the school in any way they can!!!

CHINESE NEW YEAR
Kindergarten thru 2nd grade students celebrated Chinese New Year as they learned about the traditions, ate the food, and prepared a dragon mask to parade around the school in. They were excited, loud, and very cute as they chanted Happy New Year in Chinese and banged on pots and pans to display their enthusiasm.

Dr. Seuss's
Birthday Celebration
Kindergarten thru 2nd grade classes also celebrated Dr. Seuss's Birthday as they made hats, read stories, and even got to meet the Cat in the Hat. This was a rare but exciting opportunity for the students!!!

March 2
Informational
Open House
On Wednesday, March 2, 2011, Pilibos hosted its first ever Informational Open House for the upcoming school year. Teachers and students all set up their tables, representing the different facets of Pilibos. Parents from Pilibos and from other schools, including Chamlian, Armenian Sisters' Academy, Mesrobian, and some public schools attended the meeting to receive information about the school, the upcoming year, and simply to better familiarize themselves with all the different aspects of the school.
The Principal, Nazo Apanian, welcomed everyone and spoke of our Pilibos family. One of our very own students, Gassia Krumian, prepared a DVD highlighting Pilibos's various departments, activities, faculty, students, etc.
All who attended were very excited about all things Pilibos represents, and all the new steps it has been and is taking to further improve the curriculum, programs, activities, etc.

Our Pilibos Eagle Gets a
Face-Lift

After 41 years, our school emblem underwent a face-lift of sorts. Without changing the integrity of the eagle and the design that has defined Pilibos for so many decades, we updated and modernized our emblem to better define the Pilibos of today and the Pilibos of tomorrow. We hope you love the fresh new design as much as we do!

2011-2012 Registration
April 1 - May 6, 2011
New Registration packets will be mailed to each student's home by the end of March. This year, the main registration form will already be filled out with your child's pertinent information. If there are changes or missing information, you can make such changes and return it back to the office along with the other registration forms. We hope this makes the registration process a little quicker and easier for you.
If you have any questions, please feel free to drop by our office. |
HELLO TECHNOLOGY
First it was the posting of homework on the school website, then the online gradebooks for the teachers, then the parental access site to check up on student progress. Next step... "Classrooms of the Future". We recently added two Smartboards in our school. For those of you who do not know what a Smartboard is, it is an interactive white board that uses touch technology to present, engage, and teach students. On March 4, 2011, our faculty underwent basic training for the Smartboards. Now they will gradually integrate it into their teaching. It is our goal to add more Smartboards, eventually one in each class. We hope we can quickly realize our goal with the help of our generous Pilibos Family.

Vartanants

The Armenian Department has been busy teaching our students about "Katch Vartan". From history lessons and projects, to poetry, to song, to performances, the teachers and students alike have been busily involved in all things associated with Vartanants.
The 6th Grade students performed a wonderful skit on Vartanants. Vartanants celebration is very important to all Armenians because even though we lost the fight we still kept our religion, which was the heart of the battle. The students performed with all their hearts, and it was wonderful seeing them thinking about their ancestors.
The 4th Grade students also put on a performance about Vartanats in Karapetian Hall for their parents and the 3rd-5th Graders. With their costumes and props, they were able to engage, entertain, and educate their audience. From the shepherds to the priests to Katch Vartan himself, the students looked amazing and performed even better.

Student Council
Winter Formal
Winter Wonderland

As the most anticipated event of the year, the Student Council Cabinet had made sure that all of the arrangements were made and that every small detail was taken care of. By seven o'clock in the evening, Karapetian Hall was looking sharper than ever. The walls were covered with white drapes and the tables were set with white covers, corresponding with the "Winter Wonderland" theme.
The freshmen, sophomores, and juniors arrived between seven and eight o'clock with their luxurious party buses. They took pictures in front of a snowy background, ate the delicious food, and enjoyed what had been set up for them. The seniors arrived at nine o'clock and entered a hall filled with music and dancing. They quickly set their jackets down and rushed to the dance floor to join the rest of the high school.
After an hour of dancing, it was time to announce the royal court. The students crowded around the stage, nervous to see who had won. The junior prince and princess were, Haik Gankanian and Kristina Safarian. The first couple of senior prince and princess were Arthur Arabian and Patil Malatian, and the second couple were Samvel Ayrapetyan and Stephanie Michaelian. The 2011 King and Queen were Galust Yesayan and Ana Emirzian.
The winter formal is the biggest fundraising event for the student council, and its success was very important. Without a doubt, the night was a great success, and everyone including the chaperones had a wonderful time.
It was truly a night that would never be forgotten.

KAHAM
KAHAM basketball and soccer games continue to proceed every saturday and sunday. Our teams are doing very well, as they compete against their fellow Armenian Schools. Team spirit, school spirit and fun are obvious and present throughout our kids and parents. Come and support our teams as they dribble, shoot, block, kick a goal, and just have a great time!
VARSITY BOYS' VOLLEYBALL SEASON
Our High School Boys' Volleybal team is looking very sharp and fit as they practice for the upcoming basketball season. Field Trips
The 2nd and 4th Grade classes went on a field trip to Comedy Sprotz. A fun and entertaining production for the kids to watch and even participate. The kids had a great time as they went up on stage and became part of the show.

On Tuesday, February 15, 2011, the 6th graders visited the Discovery Science Center in Anaheim, California. The interactive and hands on field trip gave students an opportunity to explore various exhibits. They had a chance to launch water rockets, experience an earthquake, and pull their own weight. The exhibits addressed concepts taught in Science class. After exploring the various areas with their groups, students were given a lab presentation about earthquakes. Our students listened attentively and confidently responded to questions throughout the presentation. The field trip was a great success. We look forward to our visit next year.
