WASC

We have been busily working to prepare for the March 28-30, 2011 scheduled visit from the WASC Accreditation Committee.  Among the many faculty meetings and workshops, student and parent surveys, and countless revisions to our report by our WASC committees, we are confident that we are prepared for the evaluation.  We would just like to thank you for your support and participation throughout this process.  It is with your undeniable encouragement and corroboration that makes our school truly special.

After-School Theater Program

The recent launch of the after-school Theater Program for Alex Pilibos students at the Armenian Youth Center has been a great success.  The students are bursting with energy and talent, ready to tackle all the performing exercises their teacher, Lory Tatoulian has to offer.  The theatre program is designed for students grades 2-12 to help foster their talents of students, introduce them to the various facets of the performing arts and develop their self-esteem.  Comprehensive in its scope, the theater program aims to teach students the fundamentals of acting, educating them about Armenian and American theater history, and giving them the experience of staging their own plays in front of a live audience.  Classes are held every Wednesday from 3:30 - 4:45 in the Armenian Youth Center across the parking lot from the Pre-school.

Pilibos is very thankful to the many families and donors who continue to support our school in both school spirit and financial gain.  With the support of the PTO, Athletic Committee, Alumni Association and other organizations and individuals, pIlibos is very lucky to have such a dedicated support system.

Recently, one of our Alumnus, Aida (Chapjian) Shorvoghlian (Class of 2002) and her husband Aram Shorvoghlian, donated $2000 to the school.  The money was collected in lieu of favors at their wedding.  Instead they believed the money was better spent on the school Aida called home for so many years.  The donation will be used for the maintenance and upkeep of the Faculty Room computers.

Thank you to the Shorvoghlians and other families like them who keep Pilibos near and dear to their hearts.  Remember Pilibos during your next celebration.

COUNSELING OFFICE

SAT Diagnostic Test at Pilibos

On Saturday, January 22, in collaboration with Sylvan Learning Centers and the Pilibos Alumni Association, Pilibos offered all 9th-11th grade students the opportunity to take a simulated practice SAT test on campus. We were happily surprised with the turnout! We had 9 freshman, 17 sophomores, and 18 juniors show up for the practice exam.

All participants will be contacted by Sylvan Learning Centers for a personalized evaluation of their performance along with suggestions for ways to improve their score. Students will also be offered a chance to take Sylvan's SAT workshop for a reasonable price.

The test is intended to assess a student's readiness for college.

As college acceptance rates become more and more competitive, it's important for a student to start preparing early for this exam. We will continue to search for and organize opportunities for our students to practice and familiarize themselves with the SAT.

Choosing a Career-

Making the Choices that are Right for You

A first step in deciding what to do after high school is to talk with your school counselor or a teacher for advice.  Ask your counselor about taking an aptitude test or interest inventory to find your strengths, weaknesses, and interests to discover potential career choices that are right for you (Counseling office has a career inventory assessment available for our students).

1. Learn about yourself.

· Values-What is important to you?

· Interests-What appeals to you?

· Aptitude-What are you good at?

2. Talk to people.

Once you've narrowed your career choices, talk to people who are working in that field or, if possible, find a part-time or volunteer job in that field. It's helpful to ask questions such as, "What's good and bad about this job?" and "How did you learn your trade?" There are many sources of career and job outlook information available-go to your school counselor, teacher or visit the following websites:

·         www.bls.gov/oco (publication of the United States Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics that includes information about the nature of work, working conditions, training and education, earnings, and job outlook for hundreds of different occupations...)

·         www.careerzone.org (GREAT tool!)

·         www.FederalStudentAid.ed.gov/myfsa  (free self-assessment called the Career Finder)

3. Consider how much training you will need for the career you're interested in.

· High school diploma: cashier, receptionist, retail salesperson, security guard, waiter, or waitress

· Special career training: auto service technician, cosmetologist, police officer, truck driver

· College degree: accountant, engineer, forensic science technician, graphic designer, nurse, pilot, teacher, public relations specialist

· Graduate degree: college professor, doctor, dentist, lawyer, veterinarian, research scientist, architect

Bullying Workshops/Discussions

for 1st-5th graders

The counseling office is preparing a series of workshops for the 1st-5th grade classes to address the very important and widespread issue of bullying. A lot of young people have a good idea of what bullying is because they see it every day! Bullying happens when someone hurts or scares another person on purpose, and the person being bullied has a hard time defending him or herself.

Bullying also can happen online or electronically. Cyber-bullying is when children or teens bully each other using the Internet, mobile phones or other cyber technology. This can include:

·         Sending mean text, email, or instant messages ·         Posting offensive pictures or messages about others in blogs or on Web sites ·         Using someone else's user name to spread rumors or lies about someone

There are 3 sessions for each grade level (1-5), and session one will begin the week of February 7th. These workshops will allow time for discussions about bullying and the harms that it can cause, and provide tools for students to address bullying problems. To be most effective, bullying prevention efforts require support from our school staff and parents. So please join in on our efforts to educate and prevent our youth!

In the meantime, here is some food for thought...

·         between 15-25% of U.S. students are bullied with some frequency, while 15-20% report they bully others with some frequency.

·         young people who bully are more likely than those who don't bully to skip school and drop out of school. They are also more likely to smoke, drink alcohol and get into fights.

·         as many as 160,000 students may stay home on any given day because they're afraid of being bullied.

·         children who bully are more likely to get into fights, vandalize property, and drop out of school. And 60% of boys who were bullies in middle school had at least one criminal conviction by the age of 24
