On December 7, 2010, the students of Pilibos
convened in the church to commemorate the 1988 Armenia Earthquake. The priest prayed for the lost souls and damages done by the quake, while the students listened and could only imagine the kind of loss their fellow Armenians went through at the time.

Living World History
On December 21, the history department organized a "living world history" assembly. The assembly was for the 5th, 8th, and 11th grades, discussing the American Civil War. The presenters were dressed in authentic Civil War era costumes and depicted what life was like at the time. This presentation was helpful to the students in these grades who are studying American history. Not only were they were able to get a feel for the political and social climate for the American people at the time, the presentation also reinforced their knowledge of their studies. | | |

OH WHAT AN ADVENTURE!
Pilibos Students, K-5th grade, recently embarked on an adventure... a Book Adventure!
In November the elementary students began participating in a program called Book Adventure that allows students to gain points for reading books and taking online quizzes that tests their comprehension levels.
The results of this program were amazing to say the least. At an assembly on December 21, 2010 the following students were honored for having the highest points:
Kindergarten - Zareh Melik-Abramians - 1780 points
1st Grade - Mireille Karadanian - 1040 points
and Satig Seraydarian - 1070 points
2nd Grade - Monique Massihians - 1620 points
3rd Grade - Haig Simitian - 1420 points
4th Grade - Arek Der-Sarkissian - 2715 points
5th Grade - Manushak Agazaryan - 920 points
Even though students continue to earn points throughout the year, each month we will honor the highest class and student from each grade level that earns the most points each month. This means that any class and any student has a chance to win each month. Please remember that even though students are competing to earn points, that it is also important that we remember that the more important part of this program is to encourage students to read more.
We congratulate all the students who participated and surpassed our expectations! We are proud of your efforts and encourage you to continue on your reading adventure!!! |

Story Night
"Twas the night before Christmas"... That's how the famous Christmas story begins... but here at Pilibos, things are done a bit differently... On December 10, 2010, the Armenian teachers, Talin Apanian, Sevan Kekejian, and Gassia Mehsseredjian organized an Armenian Story Night for K-2nd grade student in the school library. Students, parents, and teachers alike, showed up in their pajamas and slippers, ready for a story before bedtime. The teachers each read and acted out an Armenian Christmas story for the children, as they listened and became part of the story. Some arts and crafts, milk and cookies, and a whole lot of fun concluded the night. The night was truly magical, and we hope to see all of you again at our next story night! |

The County of Los Angeles Public Library held their 31st annual Bookmark contest. Students from Pilibos participated in the contest and first grader, Manuel Kesablyan even received an honorable mention for his bookmark design. Congratulations to all the students who participated and received awards for their part. We eagerly look forward to your next year's submissions. |

PTO
Christmas Boutique
The Rose and Alex Pilibos Christmas Luncheon and Boutique organized by the PTO was a great success. Ladies enjoyed shopping and browsing the boutique. Many did their Christmas shopping while they enjoyed lunch. The guests were scrambling to buy raffles in order to win one of the 40 prizes we had, but the most exciting prize was the Apple iPad. Gagik Badalyan performed Armenian folk songs and the women had a great time dancing. CPK Family dinner and fundraiser CPK night was a great evening where parents, teachers and students came together to have dinner and socialize. It was great opportunity for many parents to decompress from the hustle and bustle of the holiday season and have some family time. If you missed CPK night this time there will be another opportunity in the spring. IN'N'OUT Lunch Truck
Calendars will be coming soon!! Be on the lookout.

COUNSELING OFFICE
Chamlian 8th Graders Visit Pilibos
On December 14th, 8th graders from our sister school Chamlian, visited our 8th graders. Pilibos students greeted our guests at the front gate, and from then went on to show the students around the campus, socialized for a short bit, before having lunch together in Karapetian Hall.
After lunch, Chamlian and Pilibos 8th graders organized an informal basketball game against each other, attracting students and faculty to watch and cheer them on during lunch recess!
After parting ways, our 8th graders were so excited to have shared part of their day with them that many of them expressed how much they look forward to visiting Chamlian! It was one of several "joint" events both schools will be taking part in over the next few months.
Pilibos Professional
Development Workshop
On December 8, Pilibos welcomed a special guest, Dr. Robin Gordon, Director of Secondary Education from Mount St. Mary's University for a brief presentation to our faculty. Her presentation focused on supporting young people as they learn to make effective decisions. One of her activities was the introduction of "Heinz and his Moral Dilemma", which lays the foundation for looking at moral/character development in kids. She also introduced Kohlberg's levels of Moral development as seen in the several grade levels, using some relatable examples.
Overall, she gave us a brief introduction to the topic of good decision making and moral development amongst different grade levels, and the feedback from our faculty was overwhelmingly positive!
Financial Aid Season is Fast Approaching!
Application period for college financial aid is
Jan 1 - March 2. Visit www.fafsa.gov for more info.
In the meantime, here are some things to consider right now...
TALK TO YOUR PARENTS about how you and your family are going to finance your education. In other words, what portion of expenses are they going to cover and what are you going to be responsible for? Students and their families are expected to contribute to the cost of college to the extent that they're able. Here is a link to help you estimate how much your family will be expected to contribute (EFC): http://apps.collegeboard.com/fincalc/efc_welcome.jsp?noload=Y. This EFC calculator will help you and your family gain insight into your financial aid eligibility. If you're unable to contribute the entire cost of college, financial aid is available to bridge the gap. That's how the financial aid system works. The difference between the total cost and your EFC is considered your "financial need" and the amount of aid you're eligible to receive.
Familiarize yourself with the various federal financial aid programs available:
- Pell Grants: Grants up to $3,000 per year given based on need. This money does not have to be paid back.
- Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG): provides funds to exceptionally needy students
- Federal Perkins Loan Program: provides need-based loan funds, which you do have to pay back.
For more detailed information, please visit www.federalstudentaid.ed.gov
Scholarships are given from private sectors based on academic standards. This money does not have to be paid back. Check www.fastweb.com or www.zinch.comfor new scholarships.
College Specific Scholarships: Colleges/universities often have scholarship money available that is awarded to students either majoring in a particular discipline or have attained athletic or academic achievements. Check each school's scholarship opportunities on their website.

Field Trips
5th Grade visits Tree People Eco Tours

The 5th Grade classes visited the Tree People's eco-tour program on December 7, 2010. The purpose of this tour is to engage young people in the urban setting of Los Angeles to discover the science and significance of the urban forest, as they take part in protecting it.
The students and adults were guided through Coldwater Canyon Park's urban forest. They embarked on a hike through the trails in an effort to learn about their environmental surroundings and the significance of preserving it.
6th Grade visits Ararat Home
On December 13, 2010, Ms. Maral Arnelian, Ms, Miganough Melkoian, and Ms. Lucine Galstyan organized a field trip for the 6th grade classes to Ararat Home to visit the elderly. The experience was very memorable for the students. They felt an instant attachment to the seniors living there. The students performed various songs for the residents. The elderly were very excited for the attention and care they received, but also became very emotional over the gratitude they felt. In the end, the 6th graders were the ones who were grateful. This eye-opening experience taught them what it really means to give and to be selfless.
