PSAT

PSAT was administered at our school, Wednesday, October 13, 2010.  The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is a program cosponsored by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation. It's a standardized test that provides firsthand practice for the SAT®. It also gives the students  a chance to enter NMSC scholarship programs and gain access to college and career planning tools.

The students have developed these skills over many years with their coursework at Pilibos, both in and out of school.

     October was Armenian Cultural month.
Our teachers organized many wonderful kinds
of presentations and events that involved our
students' participation in fun and exciting ways.

Our Kindergarteners, 1st, and 2nd graders entertained us with their traditional Armenian Dress Fashion Show. They even went as far as acting out part of an Armenian wedding, with the "քաւոր and կեսուր" all present.

On October 3,2010, five women were honored at the annual Asbarez banquet.  They received the Holy See of Cilicia's "Mesrob Mashdots" award.  Our very own Dr. Hasmig Tashjian was among one of the women who was recognized for her contribution to education and the community in the Diaspora.
Our Principal, Nazo Apanian received the award on her behalf.  Her everlasting contribution and influence on the students of Alex Pilibos can never be forgotten.

Pilibos Students Volunteer
phone

The juniors and seniors from Alex Pilibos are at it again.  Many of them have volunteered their time and effort to work the phones at the ANC Western Region Office in Glendale.
Their spokesperson said, "The volunteers from the
Rose and Alex Pilibos Armenian School have played a crucial role in two areas: (1) educating voters about the upcoming elections and (2) building support for candidates who are supporters of Armenian issues, including the Armenian Genocide resolution.  In just three weeks, the students educated over 10,000 individuals in California and Oregon about the upcoming election."

Junior States of America - JSA

The Junior States of America is a growing club at Pilibos.  It is affiliated with a national organization and provides our students the opportunity to explore political issues of the day.  At weekly club meetings, members participate in thought talks, discussions and formal debates.  Members are debated the issue of the Arizona Immigration Law at lunchtime in Mrs. Sermeno's room.  Members of the club also earn the chance to participate in conventions held on weekends, where they meet with JSA members from schools throughout Southern California to debate and talk about current issues and concerns.

The next convention is being held Nov. 20-21, 2010 at the Los Angeles Airport Hilton Hotel.  Nineteen members of the club, accompanied by parents and their teacher-sponsor, Mrs. Sermeno, will attend.  This year's theme:  "America's Place in International Politics".

New members are welcome to join us on Thursdays at lunchtime in Mrs. Sermeno's room, Room 403.

fire

On Tuesday, October 5, Fire Station #35 visited our school.  The firemen presented a "show and tell" of the fire truck, uniforms, ladders, and gadgets to the Kindergarten - 2nd grade students.  They also discussed general fire safety issues and let the kids have some hands-on time with the fire equipment.  All in all, the kids had a great time and learned some important information.

College Board AP Conferences for our Faculty

On October 30, 2010 several of our faculty members who teach AP courses will be attending a College Board AP Workshop in the subject matter they teach. The workshops will offer our teachers information, tools, and strategies they need to build successful Advanced Placement Programs in our school.  Through these conferences and workshops, our teachers will strengthen their professional skills and learn techniques to help better prepare our students for college success!

Middle School Workshops

The Counseling Office has been working diligently this month organizing various workshops and presentations for the students of Alex Pilibos.  They have managed to organize interesting, informative, and crucial workshops for the Junior High students, guiding them through some of the more difficult times of their lives.

"Someone Like Me" Performance for 6th - 8th Graders

c

On October 22, 2010 Rose and Alex Pilibos welcomed Kaiser Permanente's Educational Theatre Program for a performance called "Someone Like Me". The play conveyed information about the physical and emotional changes that puberty brings through the experiences of four middle-school students.

"Someone Like Me" emphasized the following educational points:

· Puberty happens to everyone at different rates.

· It's important to communicate with trusted adults about the issues surrounding puberty and adolescence.

· Rumors and gossip are a form of bullying.

· If students need to reach out for help, resources are available

· In middle school, the developmentally appropriate choice is abstinence

The students seemed captivated and engaged throughout the entire play. After the play, the actor-educators lead a question and answer session in which they answered student questions about puberty from a medical perspective. Following that, the actor-educators made themselves available to students to ask one-on-one questions.

Drug Prevention/Education Presentation

 c

On October 26, 2010, DEA special agents John Riley, Jennifer Sweeder, Connie Gerten and DEA Investigator Kim Lambros visited Rose & Alex Pilibos to speak with our middle school students about drug prevention, drug identification, commonly used/abused drugs and their consequences. The special agents also spent time on discussing their jobs and some of the experiences they have had exposure to. They graciously answered many questions from our students, and even spent time after each presentation speaking to small groups of students who had more questions to ask! The agents came dressed in full tactical gear, which further captured our students' attention. The students were also shown a brief PowerPoint presentation about the physical and emotional aftermath of drug abuse. Overall, the presentations were informative and our students walked away with a red ribbon (in honor of Red Ribbon Week), and several informational handouts. We look forward to inviting these special agents back to our school next year!

KAHAM SCRIMMAGE GAMES
On the weekend of October 22 - 24, Pilibos along with other schools, Ferrahian, Armenian Sisters' Academy, and AGBU competed in basketball and soccer scrimmage games.  All the schools showed ready to compete and played their best.  Our young Eagles were very excited to play and cannot wait for the season to begin!

PILIBOS ATHLETIC COMMITTEE
The Pilibos athletic committee is an organization established to support, benefit, and aid the Pilibos Eagles in any way necessary.  Already, the athletic committee comprised of volunteer parents, donated their time and effort to the Kaham Scrimmage Games.  They manned the snack bar area on Friday and Saturday, as the various teams played in our gym.  We also had a large number of parents that showed up to support and cheer our athletes.  It is because of such parents that Pilibos is and continues to be a family.

Thank you parents and Athletic Committee!

THE ANNUAL ALUMNI BASKETBALL GAME
As tradition has it, on Wednesday, November 24, 2010 we will once again have our competition between Alumni and the current varsity basketball team.  Come and support our Pilibos Teams... old and young!
