| "Cyber Safety"
| On September 23, 2010, students from 3rd - 5th grade participated in a "Cyber Safety" presentation given by Diane Gonzalez from the FBI and John Riley from the DEA.
They were cautioned against cyber bullies, predators, and what not to do when playing games and joining social network sites. Most importantly, they were advised to keep their computers in a common room and not in their bedrooms, so their parents are always aware of what they are doing. There were a lot of sighs from the kids at the prospect of having their computers moved out of their rooms, but ultimately they understood the safety issues. The internet is a huge part of our children's lives these days. It functions as both an advantage and a potential harm. Let us work together to help our children stay safe and smart in the virtual world. |

| Academic Competitions | | Mock Trial
The Mock Trial program was created to help students acquire a working knowledge of our judicial system, develop analytical abilities and communication skills, and gain an understanding of their obligations and responsibilities as participating members of our society.
Pilibos has participated in the Mock Trial Program for the past 12 years. This year, the Mock Trial team is coached by Garo Daglian, alumni class of 1997 and the son of our school library benefactor, Mr. Hagop Daglian. Garo leads the Daglian Law Group in Glendale. The team will compete in a courthouse on Monday, Nov. 1 and Monday, Nov.8.

The Decathlon will take place on Saturday, February 5, 2011. Until then, the students will practice after schools to prepare for the competition.

AP Exam Results
Nine students at Rose and Alex Pilibos Armenian School have earned AP Scholar Awards in recognition of their exceptional achievements on
AP exams. The College Board's Advanced Placement Program (AP) provides students with the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school, and to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both, for successful performance on the AP exams. Only about 18 percent of the more than 1.8 million students worldwide who took AP exams performed at a sufficiently high level to also earn an AP Scholar Award. About 10 percent of our students are AP Scholars. Satenig Ghiulezian, a 2010 graduate of Alex Pilibos, was named an AP Scholar with Distinction. She earned an average score of at least 3.5 (on a 5 point scale) on all AP exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of those exams. Dona Abdo, also a 2010 Pilibos graduate, was named an AP Scholar with Honor. She received an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. Seven students were named AP Scholars, earning scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams. Four 2010 graduates received this honor: Diana Boyrazian, Edward Jierjian, Shoghak Kazandjian, and Marine Khachatryan. The other three students awarded the title of AP Scholar are seniors for the current academic year: Christine Batikian, Krikor Bornazyan, and Garo Hagopian. "We are extremely pleased to have nine students named as AP Scholars," said Mr. Nazo Apanian, principal of Rose and Alex Pilibos Armenian School. "Our faculty and staff are committed to helping our students earn such achievements with our rigorous academic program and personal attention to each student."

"Back to School" Nights
On September 22, Pilibos hosted its first Open House of the school year. Parents of 6th - 12th grades arrived at Karapetian Hall for introductions by the Principal, Dean of Students, and the Department Chairs. Later the 9th-12th Grade Parents were addressed by the Counseling Office on what they and their children should expect in high school. After the presentations, all the parents visited the teachers in their respective departments. On September 23, the parents of K - 5th grades attended their Back to School Night. There were brief introductions by the Principal and Dean of Students. In addition, there was a guest speaker, John Riley from the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration), informing and educating the parents on "Cyber Safety". While many parents were aware of some of the dangers involved with the internet, Mr. Riley's words definitely opened up our eyes to how easily hackers, cyber predators, and bullies can access and use your and your child's information. Parents, teachers, and administrators were cautioned to be on alert. Parents then had the chance to visit their child's homeroom class, where English and Armenian teachers introduced their curriculum and classroom rules and policies. We had a great turnout for both evenings. Parents who attended received pertinent information in regards to their child's school year and established a strong basis for communication among parents, teachers, and faculty. |

Electives
This year, the 10th - 11th graders have a choice of Electives that range from Law offered by Julia Agishian to Art offered by Adam Ocampo to AP Psychology offered by our counselor Maral Tavitian.
A new addition to our list of Electives is an Intro to Business class. What makes this class exciting is that it is taught by one of our very own alumni students Jack Bazrkanyan, Class of 2005. Jack recently graduated from Layola Marymount University in 2010 with a BBA degree in Business Administration. He very graciously is offering his time to Pilibos, for the students on a volunteer basis. Jack is not the first Alumni to return to Pilibos in an effort to contribute to his school.
Countless Alumni have returned as teachers, athletic coaches, and volunteers. Garo Daglian of the Daglian Law Group is also volunteering his time and know-how, coaching the Mock Trial Team as they prepare for competition.
This kind of service just goes to show what an impact Pilibos has on our students and how their time here compels them to return and give back however they can. Pilibos truly is a home away from home.

Kindergarteners @ Play

During the first week of school our students walked in not knowing what to expect. They participated in outdoor activities such as parachuting, soccer, hula hooping, and other fun games. These activities helped ease the transition into kindergarten. Today our kindergarteners walk into class happy and eager to learn.
