SHS Student Mission

Professional Mission Statements

All members of the staff of Sacred Heart School wrote professional mission statements this year to guide their work and set a goal for their professional development. These professional mission statements are displayed in their classrooms or offices and will play a role in our professional development work this year. Emily Kirwan, one of our first grade teachers, took all of the staff's mission statements and entered them into www.wordle.net to create a "word cloud". This word cloud is a visual representation of the frequency with which specific words appeared in each of the mission statements. I wanted to share this with you, our parent community; because I think that it demonstrates quite nicely the priorities at the center of our work here. - Mr. Burroughs

October is the Month of the Holy Rosary

Take this opportunity to pray together as a family. What if you've never prayed the Rosary or haven't in a long time? Try this simple guide. Do you feel like you can't make the time? Try praying together one decade each night. The best way to teach our children about the importance of our faith is to pray together with them. - Mr. Burroughs

ITBS Testing

We are preparing for our standardized test, the Iowa Test of Basic Skills and I want to make sure everyone is aware of the testing days.  We will be testing Monday, Oct. 15th - Friday, Oct. 26th.  We are also expanding our testing group this year to include 2nd grade.  Please try to avoid making any appointments during this time period, we have a limited testing window and it can be difficult to find time to make up tests that were missed.  -  Ms. Gray

Fall Goal Setting Conferences

The dates for our Fall Goal Setting Conferences have been set for Monday, Oct. 29th from 12:30-7:30pm and Tuesday, Oct. 30th from 9:00-3:15pm.  Please note, there is no school on these days.

For detailed conference information please visit the website.

Wellness Policy

As a reminder, and for those of you who are new to Sacred Heart School, due to food safety issues and an increase of allergies we only allow healthy snacks or non-food items for birthday celebrations.  Some of you may have already heard from your children's teachers that they would like you to bring in a book to share with the class, donate a book to the classroom library or provide healthy snack alternatives. Healthy birthday treats could be low-fat yogurt, squeezable yogurt, yogurt smoothies or fruit smoothies or waffles or pancakes topped with fruit. Parents are asked to check with their child's teacher at least three (3) school days in advance of the birthday celebration to discuss your plan so there will not be any conflicts. Also, because of the number of students in our school with nut allergies, we ask that you not send anything with nuts in the ingredients. - Ms. Gray

If you would like to receive your reminders via US mail, please email Alison Scott. Please make checks payable to Sacred Heart School and note "Annual Fund" in the memo section of your check. Checks can be mailed or dropped off at the front office or you can donate online at Give Now.

Attention SHS Alum Parents

Our annual Renew newsletter is coming out soon and we would like to hear from our SHS alumni who are now parents of SHS students. What were your favorite memories at SHS? Who were your favorite teachers and are they still here teaching? Tell us what you think is special having your children follow in your footsteps. We'd love to highlight these special stories in our next newsletter. Please email Alison Scott or call her at 451-1773 x107 and share your unique story.
