From the Office

ITBS Testing

We are preparing for our standardized test, the Iowa Test of Basic Skills and I want to make sure everyone is aware of the testing days.  We will be testing Monday, Oct. 15th - Friday, Oct. 26th.  We are also expanding our testing group this year to include 2nd grade.  Please try to avoid making any appointments during this time period, we have a limited testing window and it can be difficult to find time to make up tests that were missed.  -  Ms. Gray

Fall Goal Setting Conferences

The dates for our Fall Goal Setting Conferences have been set for Monday, Oct. 29th from 12:30-7:30pm and Tuesday, Oct. 30th from 9:00-3:15pm.  Please note, there is no school on these days.

For detailed conference information please visit the website.

Picture Opt-out

Sacred Heart School staff and parents regularly photograph events and activities around the school, including in the classroom. Most of these pictures are for personal use or archival purposes. However, some photos are used in promotional materials or other publications of the school (including the school website). Student photos are never identified by name without specific parent permission. If you do not want your child's photograph used in school publications or promotional materials, please contact Kerry Wyman by tomorrow, October 5, 2012 to opt-out.

Wellness Policy

As a reminder, and for those of you who are new to Sacred Heart School, due to food safety issues and an increase of allergies we only allow healthy snacks or non-food items for birthday celebrations.  Some of you may have already heard from your children's teachers that they would like you to bring in a book to share with the class, donate a book to the classroom library or provide healthy snack alternatives. Healthy birthday treats could be low-fat yogurt, squeezable yogurt, yogurt smoothies or fruit smoothies or waffles or pancakes topped with fruit. Parents are asked to check with their child's teacher at least three (3) school days in advance of the birthday celebration to discuss your plan so there will not be any conflicts. Also, because of the number of students in our school with nut allergies, we ask that you not send anything with nuts in the ingredients. - Ms. Gray

Morning Drop-Off

One of the many important lessons our primary teachers have been working on with your children has been independence.  Since the start of the school year they have been teaching your children where to put their items each morning, how to transition between subjects, where to find the materials they need in the classroom and how to get from place to place each day.  Now that we have completed our first month of school, your children are also ready to enter their classrooms by themselves.  Beginning Tuesday, Oct. 9th, we ask that parents either drop their children off as part of morning carpool, or walk with them to the side entrance and then let them enter the building and walk to their classrooms on their own.  The  only exception to this is our Pre-K students who need to walk into the building each day with a parent.  We are asking that even siblings of Pre-K students enter the building and walk to their classrooms on their own.

Morning Drop-Off Procedures

For families dropping their children off between 8:10 and 8:30, please pull straight ahead to the Library entrance before stopping to let your children out right next to the staff member on duty (or the staff member will let your child out). Please have your children exit from the passenger side of the car, step up onto the sidewalk, and walk safely on the sidewalk all the way to the school front entrance. Please do not stop and let your child out of the car as this causes a back-up in the carpool line.  Once your child has exited your car, carefully continue to drive around the back of the school via the one way loop and exit on 97th Ave NE.

Cell Phones

As a reminder, students are not allowed to use their cell phones during the school day, so if you leave messages or send text messages, they will not be able to retrieve them until after school.  If you need to get a message to your child during the school day please call the office and we will get the message to your student. Thank you.

What is HYSSTEP?
It's a new initiative at Sacred Heart School. Ask your child to explain it to you.

SACRED HEART ANNUAL TALENT SHOW

Our first Talent Show student meeting will be held at lunch recess today (Thursday) in the Moore Theatre.  Students will do an initial sign up and we will talk about ways to create and rehearse their acts.

Talent show is a student-driven activity, but we still need parental support!  We are asking that you read the talent show packet, sign and return the Parent form.  This ensures that we are all working towards the same goal of providing a quality performing experience for all SHS students.

Talent show packets will be coming home with students who attended the meeting or you can contact me for more information.  -  Kim Douglass, SHS Drama
