Music Substitute
Please join us in welcoming Cassandra McDougall to our school; she was hired to fill in for Mrs. Bolstad until she returns from maternity leave. Ms. McDougall joined us on Sept. 17th and has spent the last couple of weeks getting to know Sacred Heart and has already successfully lead us in a school mass! Ms. McDougall most recently spent 5 years is the Cedarcrest & Marysville Schools teaching both Band and Choir. We greatly appreciate the many talents she is sharing with our school and hope you will extend a Sacred Heart welcome if you see her.
ITBS Testing
We are preparing for our standardized test, the Iowa Test of Basic Skills and I want to make sure everyone is aware of the testing days. We will be testing Monday, Oct. 15th through Friday, Oct. 26th. We are also expanding our testing group this year to include 2nd grade. Please try to avoid making any appointments during this time period, we have a limited testing window and it can be difficult to find time to make up tests that were missed. - Ms. Gray
Fall Goal Setting Conferences
The dates for our Fall Goal Setting Conferences have been set for Monday, Oct. 29th from 12:30-7:30pm and Tuesday, Oct. 30th from 9:00-3:15pm. Please note, there is no school on these days.
Families with students in PK-5th Grade have already received an email from their child's teacher asking them to sign up for their child's conference; each conference is set for 20 minutes. Please sign-up for one slot only. As a reminder, in grades 1st - 5th, students lead at least some portion of the conference, so please choose a time that works for both you and your child.
Middle School (6th - 8th) Conferences will be held in the Gym, but no sign-ups are needed. Parent and students are asked to come to the Sacred Heart School Gym on either Monday, Oct. 29th or Tuesday, Oct. 30th during the times listed above and meet with each of their child's teachers for 10 minutes. The middle school teachers will be stationed around the Gym with signs indicating where each teacher is. If the first teacher you go to is meeting with another parent, please go to one of your child's other teachers.
As always, if you have questions, are uncertain about something or need help, please do not hesitate to contact your child's teacher(s) anytime by phone or email. - Ms. Gray
What is your child's goal for the first trimester?
All students in grades 3-8 have been setting academic or behavioral goals for the first trimester along with their homeroom teacher. Do you know your child's goal? If you do, ask them how they are doing in achieving it. If you don't know it, ask them to share it with you. Discussing the goal with your child on a regular basis will greatly improve his or her ability to achieve it.
- Mr. Burroughs
Picture Opt-Out
Sacred Heart School staff and parents regularly photograph events and activities around the school, including in the classroom. Most of these pictures are for personal use or archival purposes. However, some photos are used in promotional materials or other publications of the school (including the school website). Student photos are never identified by name without specific parent permission. If you do not want your child's photograph used in school publications or promotional materials, please contact Kerry Wyman by October 5, 2012 to opt-out.
Cell Phones
As a reminder, students are not allowed to use their cell phones during the school day, so if you leave messages or send text messages, they will not be able to retrieve them until after school. If you need to get a message to your child during the school day please call the office and we will get the message to your student.
Used Uniforms
We are happy so many of you continue to drop off used uniform items that can be used by other SHS students. Please note, however, we no longer need polo shirts - neither green nor white. As a reminder, anyone can purchase used pieces during the school day. The cost is $5.00 per item and you simply need to check in with Kerry to gain access to the uniform closet to check for items you would like to purchase.
Lost and Found
Please take a moment right away to mark your students' name on their items - on the OUTSIDE of their lunch boxes, on tags in their clothing and especially on their Sacred Heart Sweatshirts. Mark your child's name on either the neck tag (small, we know) or on the wash instructions/name tag located inside on the bottom left hand side of the sweatshirts. Items legibly marked with names will be returned to the students' classrooms. Unmarked SHS sweatshirts/items will go into the used uniform closet and non-uniform items will reside in our lost and found closet located in the gym foyer until it gets full. Once the closet is full, we will remind you to check for your family's items and then donate the remaining to a wonderful organization which services refugee families in the Tukwila school district.

Annual Fund
Families often ask "What is the Annual Fund?" The Sacred Heart School Annual Fund is a year round program that runs from July 1 to June 30. Your contribution provides unrestricted dollars to be used for the school. It funds general expenses, salaries, operational costs and helps keep our tuition rates low. It is one of the primary fundraisers we have here at Sacred Heart School and the only one that is fully tax deductible and qualifies completely as a corporate matching gift.
Pledges for the Annual Fund were made when you registered your child for enrollment back in March. Pledge confirmation letters will be sent out in the next week. Please check your pledge information to be sure it is correct. This year our goal for the Annual Fund is $225,000. At the moment, our pledges appear to be down from last year. Please consider your pledge and if you can, we are asking families to increase their donation by 5%. If you have any questions, please contact Alison Scott in the Development Office.
Alumni News
We are in the process of developing our second alumni newsletter called Renew. If you have a great idea for a featured article, we'd love to hear from you. If you are an alum, we would love to hear where you are and what you are doing. Please fill out our interactive form and we'll include your story in the next publication. Questions? Contact Alison Scott in the Development Office.

Survey Says!
Many thanks to everyone who responded to our late summer fundraising survey! Your feedback was much appreciated. In addition to this survey, we took the summer to review our current fundraisers and assess them from a volunteer and fundraising perspective. Combining our reviews with survey responses we have some exciting news!
Beginning this school year, we are taking the "fundraising" out of family night but keeping the "community spirit". We are working on adding a handful of community events which will take place throughout the calendar year. These events will provide varied opportunities for our community to get together without the volunteer resources required for family night or the pressure to donate that comes with the raffles and silent auction. So, in addition to our educational speakers, we will be adding a few events for our community to socialize, targeting specific groups as well as the community as a whole. Costs for these events will be minimal and intended to offset expenses, not raise money.
We are researching opportunities to get together which utilize a small volunteer base and we encourage you to bring to our attention any ideas you may have on what you would like us to bring to Sacred Heart. Please email any ideas you have to Roxane Barkley.
Thank you again for your feedback and ideas!

Cross Country
A BIG Congratulations and Thank You to all Cross Country runners and their families!
Despite the bridge being closed we had an amazing turnout. We are so close to reaching our goal so please seriously consider joining and being a part of this fabulous tradition.
This Sunday 9/30 is the final qualifying meet for k-8th grade runners. You can show up as late as race time on Sunday and still be a part of our Sacred Heart running community. Sacred Heart will run in the "A" group on the 30th, but remember you can still qualify by running in the "B" group if that works with your schedule. Please look for the special CC bulletin later in the week with more specifics. All abilities are encouraged and supported; in the past we have had runners who walked due to health complications. Grab a friend and push yourself to try something new.
We are: Strength in Numbers!
Let's bring the trophy home for our beloved Coach Murphy!
Please e-mail questions to Coach Murphy or Anne Richmond .

Eucharistic Ministers Needed for School Masses
Are you a Eucharistic Minister or always wanted to be? We'd love to have you help serve at school masses. You don't need to commit to every mass, just those that you're able to attend and would like to help. It's truly a blessing to be able to bring Jesus to the children as a Eucharistic Minister! If you are interested please contact Deanna Sanford.
