1st Day of School
The first day of school this year is Tuesday, September 4th (the day after Labor Day). We will begin the day (and the school year) in the church. We are asking that all students arrive to school by 8:20am on the first day and proceed to the front entrance to the church. The teachers will be there holding signs to make it easy to find them. Students will then line up with their teachers and walk into church together. All parents are invited to stay for our opening ceremony in the church which will begin at 8:30am and last until about 8:50am.
Drop-off/Pick-up Procedures
Please click on the above link to review the student drop-off and pick-up procedures. This will make the first week of the new school year a little less confusing and much safer.
Extended School Services (ESS)
ESS will take place on the first day of school in the morning at 7am and afternoon from 11:45-3pm.
Students will meet in the gym at 11:45 am. Please have your student bring a sack lunch.
Please contact Amy Davis at to reserve a spot for your student.
Back to School
Just a reminder, like last year, our Back to School nights are the first two evenings of the school year. Grades 6-8 will hold their Back to School Night on Tuesday, September 4th and grades K-5 will hold theirs on Wednesday, September 5th. Both evenings will run from 6:30 to 8:00pm. At least one parent from each family should attend to meet your child's teachers and learn about the year ahead. (If you need to meet with your child's teacher about issues related specifically to your child, please schedule an appointment with your child's teacher.)
Important Information before your child can start school.
Please read the attached information from the health room regarding both immunizations and student medication requirements that must be completed before the start of school. Then plan some time this summer to take care of updating your child's immunization records and/or receive any needed shots. Also provided are the requirements, deadlines and procedure to have student medications available at school.
- Mr. Burroughs
Class assignments (for K-5) and student schedules (for grades 6-8) will be sent home via e-mail on August 30th.
Fr. Steve's Installation
Let's gather together to give Fr. Steve an official welcome as our new pastor at his Installation Mass on September 8th at the 5:00 Mass. All students who attend the Installation Mass in their school uniform will receive a free dress pass. A reception will follow the Mass - with cupcakes for all children. No need to RSVP, but you may want to arrive early as I expect that there will be many in attendance.
Safe Environment Program
Everyone who volunteers with children at the school or parish is required to complete the Safe Environment/Called to Protect program. All school parents are encouraged to complete this program in if you are not currently volunteering with students in case you want to do so in the future. This three-hour training is designed to teach participants how to recognize the signs of abuse, how to respond to suspected abuse and how to keep our ministries, programs and schools safe. The Called to Protect for Ministers and Volunteers class will be offered here at Sacred Heart School in the Moore Theater on Monday, September 10th from 6-9 p.m. Please sign up for the class here.
Parents and staff who have completed the initial training class must participate in an annual online update. You can access your annual update by clicking here..
If you do not volunteer with children but would still like information about how to protect children, you can attend the Called to Protect for Parents and Families. This class will be offered at Our Lady of the Lake Parish (among others) in Seattle on September 24 at 7:00pm. However, this class does *not* meet the training requirement for volunteers.
School Enrollment
We are happy to announce that Sacred Heart School continues to experience strong enrollment for the 2012-2013 school year. Currently we have 416 students enrolled in grades pre-K through 8th. Our community is very blessed. We are grateful to God, Mrs. Knapp, and our school staff for continuing to keep our school's enrollment healthy.
Pre-kindergarten and kindergarten are full with 16 and 44 students, respectively. 1st, 3rd and 4th grades will be over our goal of 50 students in each grade by one or two students in each of those grades. This is not a change in school policy. Our goal is still 50 students per grade (1st-8th). However, as a parish school we also strive to keep families intact whenever possible. These additional students have siblings who were already admitted in other grades that are not full. So, after careful consideration and consultation with the school commission, Fr. Pat and Fr. Steve, we made the decision to admit these students. These decisions were made on a case by case basis, and we have had to turn away some applicants. Again this is not a change in our school policy, but instead making a prudent accommodation in specific situations.
We want to reassure everyone that educational research consistently demonstrates that the number one factor in a child's educational success is the classroom teacher, much more so than class size. We have terrific teachers in whom we have great confidence in their ability to educate and form our children. Class size makes little difference in educational outcomes until you get to about 16 students in a class or up to about 40. As a parish school serving a large and growing population, 16 students per class is unrealistic, except in pre-kindergarten, (and would require tuition rates in line with a private school not a parish school) and 40 students per class is 50% more than our 26. These accommodations will not compromise the quality of your child's education. In fact, our healthy enrollment numbers make possible the outstanding resources we have here at Sacred Heart School such as our reading and math specialists, school counselor, instructional aides in grades pre-K through 5th and Spanish in grades 1-8.
We look forward to welcoming all of our families, both new and returning, to the 2012-2013 school year in just 12 days. May God bless you all with a relaxing and rejuvenating end to your summer vacation.
Sincerely,
Mr. Burroughs & Ms. Gray
