Outstanding Teacher and Staff Awards - DUE TOMORROW!

We are introducing a new program this year to recognize outstanding performance by teachers and other school staff members (which includes instructional aides).  Each year one teacher and one non-teacher staff member will be selected to be recognized and awarded a $1,000 award.

Nominations will come from current and past parents, alumni, and current staff members. An independent committee will be formed to review the nominations and select one recipient in each category. The awards will be presented each year at the Sate of the School meeting in April.

Nominations for the 2011/2012 award are due no later than Friday, March 9, 2012.

Science Fair

For several months Sacred Heart students in 5, 6, 7, 8 grades have been working on developing their skills in scientific inquiry. The students have put forth much time, energy, and effort on their projects and all should be commended for this accomplishment.

Science projects were evaluated by a team of over 20 judges from the science community. Our judges graciously gave up time away from their professional schedules to assist us in this process. They were engineers, doctors, biologists, chemists, and researchers from companies and institutions such as the University of Washington, Boeing, Microsoft, Seattle Biomed, and others. We are indebted to these professionals for helping us learn more about the scientific process and its place in the real world.

Judges were randomly assigned to student projects, with each student project being evaluated by 3 different judges. The criteria that the judges used for points were: Creative ability and originality of investigation, Scientific thought, Thoroughness in data collection, Data interpretation, Skill, and Project presentation.

Scores were tabulated and compiled by grade level. All students received an award in a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place category for their grade level. In addition, the top score for each grade was awarded "Top Young Researcher". Judges were also asked to identify candidates for "Most Innovative Project" for each grade level.

2012 Science Fair Results:

Outstanding Young Researcher

These projects had the overall top scores at each grade level. This award recognizes the best among all the Outstanding Student research projects.

The winner is selected on the basis of their outstanding and innovative research, as well as their dedication and potential impact of their work.

5th Grade: Kyle Scott; 'Health Service'

6th Grade: Olivia Capestany and Quinn Floyd; 'Distractions'

7th Grade: Michael Chandler; 'Hard to Crack'

8th Grade: Claire Garrett; 'Real Smiles'

Most Innovative

These projects show a new original design, great ingenuity and are highly creativity.   These projects were voted on and selected by the judges after all of the judging was completed for each grade level.

5th Grade:   Joanie Foley; 'Paper Towels'

6th Grade:  Claire Russell; 'Plant Light'

7th Grade:  Jaxie Frey; 'Healthy and Non Healthy Cookies'

8th Grade: Sydney Lee; 'Global Climate'
