Snow Closures

Thank you all for your patience with our weather-related closures this week. It gave us a much longer break than anticipated. We tried to make the decision in plenty of time for parents to make plans, if necessary, for the next day and did our best to communicate widely and quickly (through Twitter, the school website, and FTH special bulletins). Tuesday and Friday were both difficult decisions, but we try always to put safety first when making these choices. We are currently evaluating if and how these days off will need to be made up. We will let you know in next week's FTH. We will not be eliminating any days from the Mid-Winter Break at this point.

Outstanding Teacher and Staff Awards

Nomination forms for our first Outstanding Teacher and Staff Awards are due Friday, March 9th. We are now accepting nominations.

Vision & Hearing Screenings
**Action needed if you would like to opt-out of health screenings**.

Health screenings for Vision and Hearing will be conducted January 30- Feb 3, 2012.

All students in grades K-3, 5 and 7 will have their vision and hearing checked.

If you do not wish to have your child participate, we ask that you return the "opt-out" form to your homeroom teacher or the health room before Monday, January 30th.  The"opt-out" form is available online.  If you have any other questions, please contact AnnMarie Thompsen and Linda Lavin

We also need parent volunteers to help us conduct these screenings.

Please contact Rhonna Burnett, Healthroom Coordinator for further information.

Congressional Hearings - to be rescheduled, please check your e-mail

Every year, the 8th graders prepare formal statements on the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights. They present these speeches to a panel of judges from our community, who this year all work in the legal field as judges or lawyers. The panel listens to the groups' formal presentations and then asks in-depth follow-up questions of the students. The Hearings are a great opportunity for the students to demonstrate their comprehensive knowledge of the beliefs that founded our country and how those ideals are at work today. Family and friends are invited, but seating is very limited in the two classrooms. We are very grateful to our judges John Rossmeissl, Pat Franke, Justin Osemene, Doug McBroom, Scott O'Toole and Lisa O'Toole and to our timers Laura Capestany and Ann Molitor.

Pre-Kindergarten & Kindergarten 2012-2013

We are now accepting applications for our Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten programs for the 2012-13 school year.  Please click on the above links for more detailed information on the application process and deadlines.

Activities

Playmakers present SEUSSICAL JR.

Due to the overwhelming response for Playmaker registration this year, our cast roster is full and registration is closed at this time.  This is an unprecedented event in the history of Playmakers. This year's production of Seussical Jr. is already 10% larger than any previous casts.

We wish to apologize to those of you who may have missed what turned out to be a very narrow window of opportunity to register for the show.  It is not our intent to exclude committed students or to otherwise make it inconvenient to participate.  The Playmaker board is meeting this week to discuss our registration challenges, our cast size for Seussical Jr. and our future casting policies.  We strongly encourage any students who want to register for either the main cast of Seussical or the Little Players cast, but did not make it before registration closed, to sign up for our wait list no later than WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 25th.

Please contact Dee Huff to sign up.

All wait list students will be contacted by the Playmaker Board after the deadline to announce who we may be adding to our cast for Seussical Jr.  Please note that there are still several spots open in our technical program for 6th-8th graders.  Check the Playmaker website for more details.

If you have any questions regarding the program or how we decided upon our new registration process for this year contact Kim Douglass.  Thank you for your support of this wildly successful program and we ask for your patience as we discover the best way to serve the Sacred Heart Community.

Unforgettable Summer Canoe-Tripping Camp Opportunity
Camp Wabun provides a wonderful, challenging canoe-tripping camp experience like no other for boys and girls ages 10 through 18.  This camp is only advertised through word of mouth by Wabun alumni and has been in operation since 1933, drawing campers from all parts of the United States, Canada and around the world.  The camp website provides more information about the camp and how it operates.  The camp director will be in town on Sunday, Jan. 29 at 1pm to do a presentation on the camp and answer questions for interested parents and potential campers.  This meeting is also an alumni gathering so new parents and potential campers can talk to former and current Wabun campers to learn about this experience.  Our sons have enjoyed this camp the last 3 summers and are looking forward to another Wabun adventure this coming summer.  If you have a son or daughter who is up for a serious active challenge in the great outdoors away from cell phones, video games and Facebook and would like to learn more, please contact Angela Traynor who can provide you with location information about the upcoming Wabun presentation.
