- If you do not wish to have your child participate, we ask that you return the "opt-out" form to your homeroom teacher or the health room before Monday, January 30th. The"opt-out" form is available online.
- We also need parent volunteers to help us conduct these screenings. Please e-mail Rhonna Burnett, Healthroom Coordinator Rhonna Burnett for further information.
If you have any other questions, please email AnnMarie Thompson and Linda Lavin.
Computer "Hiccup"
This week some of you may have received email that was originally sent months ago. This was not the result of a virus. Monday afternoon, the Exchange server became overloaded and had a partial crash. During the restoration process it had what could be described as an hiccup and took a batch of sent mail (Sept and prior) and marked them as unsent. When the Exchange server sees unsent mail, it does what it is programmed to do and sends them. I have cleaned out the Exchange log files and the problem should now be resolved. Thank you for your patience, and sorry for any inconvenience. - David McReynolds
Congressional Hearings
On Friday, January 20th, our 8th graders will participate in the annual Congressional Hearings from 9:00-12:00. Every year, the 8th graders prepare formal statements on the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights. They present these speeches to a panel of judges from our community, who this year all work in the legal field as judges or lawyers. The panel listens to the groups' formal presentations and then asks in-depth follow-up questions of the students. The Hearings are a great opportunity for the students to demonstrate their comprehensive knowledge of the beliefs that founded our country and how those ideals are at work today. Family and friends are invited, but seating is very limited in the two classrooms. We are very grateful to our judges John Rossmeissl, Pat Franke, Justin Osemene, Doug McBroom, Scott O'Toole and Lisa O'Toole and to our timers Laura Capestany and Ann Molitor.
Our Lady of Guadalupe
We have a new image of Our Lady of Guadalupe hanging at the end of the main hallway in the school (between the primary wing and the reading specialist's room). As Patroness of the Americas, Our Lady of Guadalupe is a terrific addition to our school. We are grateful to the Bayarena family for their donation and to Fr. Pat for blessing the image last Friday.
New Families at SHS
We are thrilled to advise that we have two new families that have joined us in January.
Sophie Miller is in Ms. Heinrich's 2nd grade class and has just arrived here with her family from Luxembourg. The Arkley family is returning to the USA after spending the last year and a half in Belgium and have three students now at SHS: Kirsten in 4th grade with Ms. McGrath,Nathan in 5th grade with Mrs. Slater and Trent in 6th grade. We welcome you all to our community!

Sign up now for our new Smart with Art Winter Session. We will focus on art from a variety of different cultures. Explore the Art of Mexico and create a yarn art painting. Discover Afrikan Adinkra Printmaking, take a whirl with sumi ink and brushes and create a Chinese Calligraphy work of art on rice paper, and much more! Class begins on Thursday January 19th from 3-4:15pm in the art room and runs for 8 weeks. There is no class on 2/23.
Cost is $140. Please register online at or drop off a check made payable to Smart with Art at the school office. Class is open to students in grades K-6. All materials provided. We do suggest packing an extra snack on afterschool art days, artists tend to get hungry!

Unforgettable Summer Canoe-Tripping Camp Opportunity
Camp Wabun provides a wonderful, challenging canoe-tripping camp experience like no other for boys and girls ages 10 through 18. This camp is only advertised through word of mouth by Wabun alumni and has been in operation since 1933, drawing campers from all parts of the United States, Canada and around the world. The camp website provides more information about the camp and how it operates. The camp director will be in town on Sunday, Jan. 29 at 1pm to do a presentation on the camp and answer questions for interested parents and potential campers. This meeting is also an alumni gathering so new parents and potential campers can talk to former and current Wabun campers to learn about this experience. Our sons have enjoyed this camp the last 3 summers and are looking forward to another Wabun adventure this coming summer. If you have a son or daughter who is up for a serious active challenge in the great outdoors away from cell phones, video games and Facebook and would like to learn more, please contact Angela Traynor who can provide you with location information about the upcoming Wabun presentation.
