ITBS/CogAt Testing
Our annual standardized testing for students in grades 3-8 begins next Wednesday. This year students in grades 3-8 will be taking the Iowa Test of Basic Skills, which measures student learning, and students in grades 3, 5, 7, and 8 will also take the CogAT test, which measure student learning style and aptitude. Together, these tests provide the school and parents with important information that is used to evaluate instruction, curriculum, and individual student progress. Students will be testing on different schedules for each grade.
In order to support your child's success with this testing, please make sure that he or she gets plenty of sleep the night before, eats a good breakfast, and avoids being absent during testing times. - Mr. Burroughs
Halloween and All Saints' Day
We will be continuing our annual tradition of observing All Saints' Day with a saint parade assembly at the beginning of the school day followed by an all-school Mass. Students in pre-K through third grade are asked to come to school dressed as a saint (or good person from the Bible) of their choice. Each class has different requirements about requirement, so please check with your child's teacher for complete details. However, I want to emphasize that saint "costumes" can be very simple (e.g., a sash with saint's name or your child carrying some symbol associated with saint) or elaborate. The point of this celebration is for all of our students in pre-K through 8th grade to learn about the saints and celebrate them at this special time each year.
Halloween, or All Saints' Eve, is on Monday, October 31st. While the major part of the celebration of Halloween takes place after school with trick-or-treating, we will be observing Halloween here at SHS with a free dress day for all students who bring in non-perishable food items for the WIN Food Bank. There will be no Halloween parties at school, as we have decided to emphasize giving to those in need here at school. We as a staff felt that it is important at a Catholic school to give from our bounty of blessings (which include a big haul of candy on Halloween night) to those in our community who lack enough food to eat. Details of which foods are most needed at this time will follow in next week's FTH. This does not mean an end to parties at Sacred Heart School, but for this holiday we are replacing parties with an opportunity to give to others.

Parent Aide for Spanish
Hola amigos! This year SHS has expanded the Spanish program to include grades 1-8. This has increased the work load for the Spanish teachers and they are looking for a Parent Aide to help them with various tasks. We're hoping to find someone who would come in for an hour each week to do copying, collating, stapling (classroom prep), etc. Please contact our Classroom Parent Aide Coordinator, Annette Griffith
Eucharistic Ministers
We are looking for more Eucharistic Ministers for our school masses. If you're available to help out periodically as a Eucharistic Minister, please contact Rowella Thomason. We are still looking for 2-3 Eucharistic Ministers for this Friday's school mass.
Microwave Use in the Lunchroom
Please note lunchroom microwaves are for reheating for up to 15 to 30 seconds.
This year, we regularly have students bringing Hot Pockets, frozen dinners and other meals that require more than a minute in the microwave. Effective immediately, microwave use will be limited to 30 seconds per student. For those of you who have children who like the cup of noodle option, we do have one hot water dispenser available. However, this should not be used by the younger grades as we do not want any one burning themselves. Thermoses are also a great option; we have seen some creative lunches packed in Thermoses this year, a hot dog put in a thermos of hot water, a variety of delicious leftovers and soups. We also know there is an item on the Blue Plate Express menu that is contributing to the lines at the microwave. The "Pizza Kit" was intended to eat cold, but this not been our experience in practice, so we have asked Blue Plate to find a substitute.
Thank you in advance for your help. - Ms Gray and Mrs. McLeod
