Back to School Professional Development

Teachers returned to school on August 24th for their first in-service on our new K-5 Language Arts program, LEAD 21:  Literacy expanded, Equity ensured, Acceleration achieved, Differentiation refined, 21st Century learning.  To date they have attended ten intensive hours of training in this exciting, comprehensive literature program.

After a reflective and relaxing day at our annual staff retreat at St. Mary's on the Lake, teachers attended their second in-service, "Connecting Writing Across the Curriculum K-8".

Our in-house writing experts, Rosemarie Engman and Kaleen Covington, led a hands-on workshop for teachers of all grades and subjects to review our writing program with 6 traits and Jane Schaffer. During the workshop the key components and writing terms were reviewed for the writing process. The target goal for all teachers is to develop a comprehensive writing environment that creates a Sacred Heart graduate who writes independently with a clear understanding of the essentials of effective writing.

More information on the writing process, writing terms, ratios, and examples of the writing format will be posted on our website as a reference for future writing assignments.

- Bridget Rorvik, Vice Principal for Professional Development

Activities

Chess Club

It's time to sign up for the fall session of Chess Club!  Session runs from Sept. 20 - Dec. 6 (not 11/22) on Tuesdays from 2:00-3:00.  Any student in grades K-8 who is interested in learning or increasing his/her knowledge of chess is invited to join.  The cost for the 11 week session is $155.  (Price goes up to $165 on Sept. 13.)  All levels are welcome.  We will have experienced coaches from Chess4Life.  This is Sacred Heart's Chess Club's third year.  Last year, we had several students participate in area tournaments and six students qualified to play in the Washington State Chess Tournament.  Chess study has shown to increase math skills, memory, and self-confidence.  It also improves patience, concentration, and sportsmanship.  Consider signing your child up!  Registration can be done online.
