Back to School Nights
Our Back to School Nights will be held this year on the first two nights of the school year. All parents are encouraged to attend. This is not an event for students.
These evenings will provide an opportunity for you to meet with your child's teacher(s) and learn about the year ahead (policies, activities, expectations, curriculum, discipline, etc.). You will also hear a presentation about upcoming school activities and programs. This is an important evening for all parents.
7th Grade Social Studies
In order to more effectively meet the Washington State EALRs for 7th grade Social Studies, we have made two important changes to the curriculum for the coming year. First, we have decided to focus the entire year on Washington State history, economics, government, and culture. Although the state recommends also studying a half year of world history, this is not required. At least a half year of Washington State History is required. Our 6th grade students study world history for an entire year. By giving our 7th grade students an entire year of Washington State social studies, they will develop a much more in-depth understanding of the state in which they live, while simultaneously developing the skills that the state wants the students to develop in this grade. In addition, we have acquired a new textbook that will better support instruction in this class. The students will also be reading either "Farewell to Manzanar" or "The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet" as a part of their curriculum.
Edmodo Website
In order to increase effective communication between teachers, parents, and students, we have decided to join Edmodo. It is a terrific site for building educational communities. Edmodo will replace the functionality of the teacher websites that were lost in our transition to Power School. But Edmodo is much more than a simple replacement. It will allow teachers and classes to interact as learning communities in ways that will enhance instruction.
Each teacher will be using Edmodo in different ways. Primary grades will use the site to interact with parents, whereas older students will be able to log on to the site themselves in order to retrieve rubrics, reading selections, study guides, etc. as well as to respond to questions posted by the teacher.
There will be a bit of a learning curve for all of us as we add this new functionality to the school. However, I think that you will find Edmodo to be an effective and powerful tool for communication and learning. I encourage you to take a look at Edmodo now to see what it is and what it can do for our school. - Mr. Burroughs
