A fish bowl when filled with water will sustain the life of a fish, but when it is full of spare change it will sustain the life of a human being...

...a fishbowl of coins inspired Dorothy Goodwin to create Gathering Change, Inc.

Place a fishbowl in your home or business and help us continue changing the lives of hungry families in our community. Call (617) 548-5357 or send an email to dgoodwin@gatheringchangeinc.org to fill your fishbowl for GCI.

President's Letter

Dear Friends,

Gathering Change, Inc. continues to be humbled by the outpouring of support from the youngest among us. Next week, 500 students at the E. Ethel Little School in North Reading will begin to collect spare change for their neighborhood food pantry. In addition to making posters, the second graders are busy learning the song "Hero" by Mariah Carey which they will sing in order to inspire their classmates.

The lyrics say: "if you look inside your heart you don't have to be afraid of what you are...There's an answer if you reach into your soul and the sorrow that you know will melt away, and then a hero comes along with the strength to carry on and you cast your fears aside and you know you can survive, so when you feel like hope is gone look inside you and be strong and you'll finally see the truth, that a hero lies in you."

The lesson is that we all, no matter what our age, stand in our own light to help each other. Change starts from within and it is that change of heart, that feeling of hope that supports our neighbors and our selves.

I applaud all the "Heroes" of Gathering Change, Inc. In the words of the late Christopher Reeve "A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to preserve and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles."

Thank you for your continued support!

Sincerely yours,

Dorothy Goodwin

President

Spring Cleaning for Change
We'll Take Those Extra Coins You Didn't Know You Had

GCICan_COinsAn explosion of arboreal color revives and entertains these mid weeks of spring inspiring many of us to clean, sort and organize our homes. As you go through your closets, drawers and cars, keep an eye out for change that can be transformed from mere quarters, dimes, pennies and nickels to jars of peanut butter and bags of lentils. How can this happen? Gathering Change, Inc. takes change and turns it into food.  Since 2008, GCI has collected spare change for community food pantries and has raised over $78,000, the majority of which has been coins.

In the process of your spring cleaning, if you hear clinking in the pockets of winter coats and trousers or discover forgotten coins on the floor of your car, consider donating the change to GCI.  Every little bit helps!  We will pick up your coins, no matter how much or how little. Check out our website at www.gatheringchangeinc.org or call (617) 548-5357 for more information.

Rada Boutique Fundraiser for GCI

Rada BoutiqueRada Boutique, the popular upscale consignment shop in downtown Wakefield, has an interesting idea for women who would like to give to Gathering Change, Inc. while cleaning out their closets. If you have designer brand items that you are no longer using or wearing (no older than two years and in new or like new condition for the current season), you may consign your clothing, handbags and jewelry and request the proceeds for the resale be attributed to the Gathering Change, Inc. account. Some labels that would be gratefully accepted are Gucci, Chicos, Coach, Louis Vuitton, Cache', Bebe and Ann Taylor to name a few and also brands from high end department stores. If your item (s) does not sell within 90 days and is over $50, you may request to take it back.

If this way of contributing to GCI speaks to you, please call Rada for an appointment at (781) 224-1033. Rada Boutique is located at 394 Main Street, Wakefield Center.  Email: radafashion@gmail.com

About Gathering Change, Inc.

Gathering Change, Inc., is a grassroots charitable organization that collects spare change from our homes, schools, faith communities and businesses. Our mission is to meet the immediate basic needs of citizens within our cities and towns who cannot achieve this goal alone. The funds are distributed back into our local food pantries and social programs. Gathering Change, Inc., gives everyone the opportunity to participate by sharing their abundance, thereby fostering a sense of interconnection, care and well-being throughout our neighborhoods.
