Innovation Initiative Update
Our schools continue to move forward with exciting new ideas for learning through the District 49 Innovation Initiative. At a February Board of Education Work Session, several school leaders presented proposals. The driving force behind all of the innovation proposals is student achievement and making changes that will improve the learning environment for every student. The plans also focus on establishing accountability for students and teachers, and reinforcing support networks when necessary.
Sand Creek Innovation Zone
The three elementary schools from the Sand Creek Innovation Zone presented the innovation plans developed by their school communities. Evans International, Remington and Springs Ranch Elementary Schools shared proposals focused on supporting students and teachers. Falcon Zone
Falcon High and Falcon Middle School each presented updated plans, which included changes to technology policies and enhanced learning options.
POWER Zone A zone-wide calendar proposal aims to increase time for quality in-class instruction and foster support from stakeholders by incorporating parent/community feedback. The plans will be discussed again at the next Board of Education meeting on March 8. Read a full update from the district's Innovation Zones.

Colorado Springs Engineering Summit
Hundreds of students, families and professionals turned out for the first Colorado Springs Engineering Summit. Middle and high school students had the opportunity to connect with the engineering world and explore opportunities for advancing their knowledge and skills related to engineering. Top engineering universities and technical institutions were also represented, as well as business leaders in the engineering industry. Sand Creek High School teacher Todd Matia launched the Sand Creek Engineering Summit in 2011 and saw the need to expand to a regional event."We needed more space to accommodate attendance and allow students and engineers to show off what they can do," Matia says. Thanks to all who contributed to the success of the event!!

International Education Week
Students and teachers at several District 49 elementary and middle schools got a treat courtesy of ETC - Education, Travel, and Culture - a non-profit organization that places foreign exchange students with local host families. ETC students from South Korea, Sweden and Switzerland visited the schools during International Education Week, an initiative to raise cultural awareness. The students shared their cultural traditions and customs with the audience. The exchange students used a variety of props and slideshows, and invited students from the audience to participate.
