Trick r' Treat Hours -Sun., Oct 31st from 3-7pm

Mayor Saverino Sr. has established the official Trick or Treat Hours for Sun., Oct. 31st from 3 - 7 pm. Motorists are asked to be especially vigilant during this 4-hour period so Carol Stream children and their chaperones can have a safe and enjoyable Halloween. In addition, motorists are reminded of the new Illinois Crosswalk Law signed by Gov. Quinn this past July that requires drivers to STOP (not Yield) at both controlled and uncontrolled crosswalks when a pedestrian(s) is walking in the street lane upon which the vehicle is traveling or when a pedestrian is approaching so closely from the opposite lane of traffic as to constitute an immediate traffic hazard. In addition, a pedestrian entering a crosswalk cannot assume that the approaching vehicle will stop, and therefore must always be especially vigilant as to their own safety when entering any crosswalk.

Parents and chaperones are reminded of their important role in making sure children under their care have a safe Halloween.  To this end, the following safety measures should be gone over with children before departing on your candy walk:

Make sure the costume fits your child is brightly colored or has reflective marking and is 'flame resistant';

Make sure your child's costume doesn't drag on the ground;

Wear a glow-in-the-dark watch you can read in the dark;

Costumes accessories like light swords and sabers should be made of soft flexible material;

Carry a flashlight and makes sure your child's shoes fit;

Obey traffic signals, cross streets between crosswalks or at intersections. If no sidewalk exists, walk on the parkway adjacent to the street and never on the street itself;

Walk, don't run, don't cut across yards or driveways and stay on sidewalks.  If there is no sidewalk, walk on the left side of the road facing traffic;

Never approach a vehicle, occupied or not unless accompanied by a parent or guardian;

Stay away from dogs you don't know;
Trick or treat in familiar neighborhoods or at the homes of friends and neighbors and avoid unfamiliar and unlit homes;

Be courteous & say 'thank you' upon getting a treat and don't push others when you are at the door;

Never enter a home, but remain on the stoop or porch for a treat;

Never approach a home that is not well lit or does not have a porch or front light on;

Never play around a lit jack-o-lantern;

Instruct children not to eat any candy until their parents have inspected it at home.

Police Dept. Receives National Accreditation

On Oct. 4th, Mayor Saverino Sr. and the Board of Trustees were presented with a formal certificate of accreditation from CALEA (Commission on Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies) from Chief Kevin Orr certifying the Department as fully compliant with over 459 different nationally recognized standards for excellence in law enforcement.

The Police Department began the lengthy accreditation process in 2007 during which they invited an assessment team to begin the process of conducting a comprehensive review of department policies, procedures, practices and operational protocols. CALEA Accreditation assists law enforcement agencies in improving management supervision, reducing exposure to risk and liability, enhancing public accountability, strengthens community partnerships, promotes the efficient use of resources and in doing so, improves service delivery and solidifies inter-agency cooperation and coordination. The accreditation process helps the agency establish a blueprint for service excellence going forward.

Officer Glen Gray was instrumental in assisting with the accreditation review, and, to this end was presented with the Chief's Award of Merit for his leadership and organizational skills throughout the process.  In addition, Deputy Chief Ed Sailer was given Honorable Mention in his role as Accreditation Manager during the 3-year effort.
