Village Recognized
for Energy Competition

On Thu., July 15th the Village and 9 other Illinois communities were recognized for their participation in the 2009 Commonwealth Edison Community Energy Challenge (CEC). The goal of the challenge competition was for each community to devise and execute a strategy for reducing overall electrical energy use across all sectors of the community to include schools, industries, large commercial
retailers, small hard to reach businesses
hotels, other government agencies
as well as individual
homeowners and apartment communities. The competition began on June 1, 2009 and ended on May 31, 2010.

The Village was given special recognition for its program
accomplishments that included the following:

* Linked 363 apartment units to the All-Electric Multi-Family program incentives;

* Partnered with a ComEd Trade Ally to successfully deliver commercial and industrial energy savings to several local businesses;

* Installed energy efficient lighting in all municipal buildings and facilities;

* Distributed 2,600 CFL bulbs to local residents and hard-to-reach businesses;

* Successfully partnered with the US Regional Post Office to support their efforts to replace lighting in their expansive mail sorting facility and to install energy efficient seals on truck dock doors.

All told, the Village with the support of its network of energy partners facilitated the reduction of 1.2 million kilowatt hours of electricity during the 12-month competition which reduced annual CO2 emissions equivalent to removing 165 passenger cars from local roads, reducing 90,000 of gasoline consumption and heating 105 residential homes for a year.

Greetings!

The Village wants to thank all of those residents that helped make the Aug. 19th 'Concert for the Troops' a wonderful success. Thanks to an outpouring of generosity, the Village raised over $2,000 in combined cash and troop care items that will be donated to Operation Support Our Troops Illinois (OSOT-IL).  OSOT-IL will in turn use the donations to send troop care packages to enlisted military personnel in the Iraq and Afghanistan theaters. Special thanks to Carol Stream resident Marylu Clark, the winner of the 50/50 raffle who donated her winnings back to OSOT-IL, as well as to members of VFW Post 10396 of Carol Stream who presented Mayor Saverino Sr. with a $500 check to support our troops. Additional event support from the Carol Stream Youth Council, Saverino & Associates, Carol Stream Culver's, Rocco Vino's, the Police Department Volunteer Corps as well as from the 2nd Battalion 24th Marine Reserve Unit from Chicago made for a wonderful end to a memorable summer concert season.

School District 93 Seeks Student Mentors

Community Consolidated School District 93 seeks adult role models to help maximize the academic, social and emotional potential of its students. Mentors work with students to help them establish positive relationships with classmates and school staff, and in so doing, improve their motivation, ability to trust, attendance and overall academic success. Mentors are expected to meet with a student at their school once a week for 40-45 minutes during the student's scheduled lunch period. Mentor candidates should have a caring personality, enjoy interacting with students, be a good listener and able to make a solid commitment. For more information on the Student Mentoring Program, contact Betsy Thome at (630) 539-3154, send an e-mail to thomenb@ccsd93.com or click here
