Chadashot: What's New at BYDS?

Consecration Begins Judaic Journey for Kindergarteners

Highlighting the theme of Sukkot and enhanced with a new emphasis on more Hebrew songs and melodies, this year's Kindergarten Consecration became an impressive display of Judaic symbolism and class spirit. Rabbi Rosen and Rabbi Strauss led the assembly of families and BYDS elementary students in blessings and prayers, and Hazzan Propis contributed a special song for the holiday. Rabbi Strauss spoke about the meaning of the lulav and emphasized the role of the Consecration ceremony as an official beginning of each student's Judaic journey. The Kindergarten students presented a program called "The Four Species," and shook their hand-made lulavs and etrogs to honor the occasion of Sukkot.

The presentation of a Torah for every Kindergarten student capped the program--each Torah was boxed and wrapped with a special cloth covering with the student's name and Hebrew name carefully inscribed on the cover. The Kindergarten teachers, specialists, the musical director, and musical accompanist were presented with flowers by the PTO to reflect appreciation for all their work and support in preparing the students for the ceremony.

Pre-K Herb Garden Work Day--October 10 @ 10am

Garden Work Day--Next Wednesday

Can you lend a hand for an hour or two?

As you know, one of the highlights of the Pre-K kids' year is running their very own farmers' market in the spring: selling herbs from a beautiful garden on the West side of campus. If we are able to get the raised garden beds prepared soon, we may be able to plant a winter garden and host a winter farmers' market in addition to the spring market. To do that, we need some help. On Wednesday, October 10th from 10 am to noon (right after the PTO meeting), we will be working in the garden, laughing together, and learning about organic gardening in an urban environment. The kids would be thrilled. We need at least ten person-hours, but we are happy to have more help. Please sign up for a shift soon and bring your garden gloves and small garden tools if you have them, but come even if you don't know what we're talking about. We look forward to growing with you.

Volunteers Needed

 Calling All Alumni!

BYDS is involved in creating a comprehensive database of BYDS alumni from the first year of graduates. We are looking for an alumnus from each class to help track down people from his or her class through personal contacts, Facebook, and Google. No technical skill required and very little time commitment, but will be a terrific community-building and friend-raising opportunity for the school. If you are interested in helping out, please be in touch with Lydia Musher (BYDS parent and spouse of BYDS alumnus) at lmusher@gmail.com.
