Chadashot: What's New at BYDS?

New Mimio/Skype Technology Brings Brooklyn Author to Classroom

In Julie Rubenstein's Fifth Grade Language Arts, students followed up with their summer reading assignment, the 220 page novel "The Thing About Georgie" by Lisa Graff, with a plethora of classroom writing assignments and response activities. The big one happened today, when the Brooklyn-based author was beamed into the classroom via the school's new Mimio classroom technology, transforming the Fifth Grade class into a live audience Q & A session with Ms. Graff.

The novel is about a 4th grade dwarf named Georgie who has many distinctive qualities and challenges, but the book emphasizes that everyone has unique aspects.

In addition to the homework task of producing three questions for Ms. Graff, students have had discussions, performed reader response exercises, and produced a constellation of twelve individual traits, likes, dislikes... by responding to the main sentence completion exercise in the novel, "The thing about me is..." Single responses to this sentence prompt were then ripped into twelve pieces of paper, each containing yet another individual feature. Here is a sampling of student responses:

The thing about me is..."I'm a vegetarian." "I want to be a teacher when I grow up." "I want to go to Columbia for college." "I can do gymnastics." "I've never been to Italy."

During this morning's live video feed, students asked such questions as "What inspired you to write 'The Thing About Georgie'?" "Have you ever met a dwarf?" "How did you come up with the plot of the story?"

With this literature assignment, students learned the themes of diversity, respect for differences, and inclusion. The Fifth Grade students are experiencing a very exciting start to the new school year in all their subjects!

BYDS Art

BYDS Three-Year Art Project Completed

Beth Yeshurun Day School Art Instructor Jodi Gold, who has been at the school for twenty-seven years, has finally reached a first in her career. The school can now proudly display its first permanent student art installation, to go along with its three main art galleries that are designed to display student art work on a rotating basis.

The permanent art installation was three years in the making, involving thousands of colored broken glass mosaic pieces, and over a hundred students. The work is entitled מעגל חודשי השנה העברית  , or Cycle of the Hebrew Months, andwas conceived three years ago when the school celebrated Yom Ha'Atzmaut.

Cycle of the Hebrew Month combines each month on the Hebrew calendar with the imagery associated with the Jewish celebrations that are scheduled in that month. The center, or hub, of the art work contains the images and the message of Shabbat. Jodi Gold took the idea from some depictions of the zodiac containing Hebrew themes discovered by the school's Hebrew Learning Specialist during the 2009/2010 school year,

The mosaic took several days to install. It hangs outside the school's new Reiches Hall, at the west end of the Heritage Wall and Art Gallery, which is a gift from the Horwitz, Selzer, and Sondock families.
