The Arts on Campus:
BYDS to Hear Houston Symphony Wind Players on
Monday, May 14
This coming Monday morning at 10am in Freedman-Levit, BYDS Elementary students will experience a few outstanding orchestral musicians from the Houston Symphony in a concert by two of their wind instrument players, featuring the oboe and flute.
The Monday concert is part of a multi-year arrangement with the Houston Symphony and Beth Yeshurun Day School to bring professional musicians to school to present pieces from their repertoire and to discuss their instruments. In the last couple of years, BYDS has been visited by members of the brass section, base string players, plus violinists and violists.
Here are brief bios for the two musicians coming to BYDS on Monday:
Aralee Dorough, principal flute, began studying flute at age 9. She received her undergraduate degree from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Ohio and then went on to continue her studies at the Yale School of Music. Aralee won the principal oboe position with Houston in 1991. She has appeared as soloist with the symphony on numerous occasions and has played with the Houston Symphony Chamber Players and Da Camera Society of Houston.
Colin Gatwood, oboe, grew up in Pittsburgh, PA, where his father was principal oboe with the Pittsburgh Symphony and his mother, a violinist, was a free-lance musician and teacher. He began his musical studies on the piano at age 5, but by the time he was 9, he had begun taking oboe lessons from his father. He is a graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Ohio. His first orchestra job was with the Pittsburgh Symphony, playing second oboe for four years. From there, he went on to join the Guadalajara Symphony Orchestra in Mexico and then, in 1991, he won the position of second oboe in Houston.
We are thrilled that our students will have this extraordinary and rare opportunity to hear from these players with world class talent.

BYDS Students to Demonstrate Odyssey of the Mind Projects
We invite the entire school parent community to join us next Wednesday, May 16, at 9:00am in Freedman-Levit to observe our students who have been involved with Odyssey of the Mind for several months this year. This is our first year of running the program, and the students exhibiting their projects on Wednesday are very excited about their accomplishments. Odyssey of the Mind teaches students to learn creative problem-solving methods while having fun collaborating with their student team in the process.
We'll be observing examples of "Hide and Peek" and "You Make the Call" projects-the objectives and details that are required for each project will be explained to the audience during the introduction.
We hope you will join us to watch and support our students who have been involved in these creative problem-solving sessions this year-we're proud that they are taking these steps to showcase their work. |
Express Reminder: "Mondays in May" continues this Monday morning, May 14. Parents please take note: on Monday morning, we invite you to park and walk your children in to school and enjoy a cup of coffee and a muffin in the Front Lobby! We'd love to have some company...please come and join us! |

Cool Apps For Summer Fun with an Emphasis on Learning
Many of our BYDS students have been able to explore many educational features on the iPad during their time in the Enrichment Lab this year. Ms. Mesches, our Learning Specialist, has researched lots of cool apps that kids can be using at home this summer to keep their learning skills sharp. This year Ms. Mesches was the lucky recipient of an iPad2, by virtue of her work administering and managing the Title I, Title II, and Title III federal education grants on behalf of our school.
The Title I Grant offers services for students who need extra support (PLATO Tutorials); the Title II Grant is for Teacher Training; and the Title III Grant provides services for students who qualify as an English as a Second Language learner (ESL.) All of our teachers have benefited from in-service training through the Title II Grant this year in the areas of Singapore Math, Readers' and Writers' Workshop, and SmartBoard Training.
At a recent conference that Ms. Mesches attended in New Hampshire, a session on Apps for the iPad was extremely educational. Below is a list of Apps that Ms. Mesches put together that are good to use during the summer break. You'll need to check a little further with these apps to know the suitable age ranges they are designed for, but do contact Ms. Mesches with your questions. The Apps are suitable for different grade levels--some are free and some are not. Ms. Mesches' all time favorites are "Stack the States" and "Stack the Countries."
Here's the "Great Apps" list-enjoy:
