New Preschool Playing Grounds Nearly Ready
What began as a flash flood on January 9 that sparked a long ordeal of evacuation, renovation, and displacement for the Early Childhood Program will soon come to an end with an entirely new subterranean infrastructure for the playground. The contractor Meyerson Builders is involved in completing the final touches of the playground--installing the grass, the irrigation, and the separation fencing. Soon, the kids will be back out there playing on a thoroughly thick bed of new grass, with a whole new section of cement trike path that was part of the plans to create the new drainage system.
The huge project involved the entire playground surface area, including the walkways that lead to the preschool classrooms, the center of the open grass area, and along the new administrative wing of the school. Some of the side projects included removal of the giant lamp post, which had been sitting there unusable, serving as an eyesore and an obstacle on the playing field for decades. Workers also removed the CDO swing set frame, which had been another obsolete item--the regular EC swing set, the one that the children do use, remains in place. The removal of these items opens the door for some new playground and natural features the school would like to install should funding become available, like a grove of trees in the CDO area in addition to a shade structure so the littlest kids can have a space that will be cool and less exposed to direct sunlight.
School proposal to parents: If there are any landscape design experts out there who can spare some time with us, or if there is anybody interested in helping us with some plantings along with other enhancements to the playground, do contact BYDS and ask for a meeting with the Head of School. We would be happy and eager to arrange for your support to a very important area of our school facilities.

Fifth Graders Climb, Swim and Star-Gaze
at Annual Camp Tradition
On Monday morning this week, BYDS Fifth Grade students embarked on their annual retreat tradition, donning their cornflower blue T-Shirts and yanking bags stuffed with their camp attire. It would be a full three day, two night experience at Camp Champions. The days and evenings were full with learning, activities, team-building, prayers, and lots and lots of fun.
The students participated in wilderness courses, high ropes, team building, rock wall climbing, lake swimming, kayaking, and astronomy in the evening. Students were able to learn and view different constellations, planets and stars and view the moon through a high powered telescope. Each day began with a service in a gazebo on the lake. The student engaged beautifully in all activities. Parent chaperones accompanied the staff and the students. Students set goals and challenges for themselves regarding all activities. It was a confidence building experience and bonding for all students.
Thank you to our many parent chaperones for taking part in this year's Camp Champions Fifth Grade Retreat --your involvement is very much appreciated! Lisa Myers, Rene Shapiro, Cecilia Garfinkel, Brigitte Minkowitz, Eric Cohen, Isaac Johary, plus our Fifth Grade teacher team Paula Singer and Eve Zehavi, and from our admin staff, Elementary School Principal Mindy Rosenthal and Judaic Studies Director Sharon Knafo.

| BYDS Math & Geography Enrichment |
Third Grade Visits the Math Enrichment Lab
Every week since the beginning of this school year, usually on Fridays, the entire third grade eagerly awaits visiting Ms. Mesches's Enrichment Lab. The children spend an entire hour working with challenging math and geography games. The goal is to challenge each child beyond their level through games of skill, strategy, and problem solving. All three teachers and Ms. Mesches participate by playing the games, checking that answers are correct, and overseeing good sportsmanlike behavior. Math games such as Muggins, Big Brain Academy, Math Tiles, Cat and Mouse, Q-Bitz, and Double Shutter are a part of the Friday enrichment program. Ten Days in the USA, Africa, Asia, Europe, and The Americas teach the importance of map skills and the exposure to geography. The atmosphere in the room is full of excitement and energy, and the students are engaged the whole time. Watching a group of forty students in one room thoroughly engrossed in learning brings a sense of fulfillment to the teachers who work hard to make the most out of learning. This enriching program will continue through the end of the year.
