Yom Hazikaron and Yom HaAtzmaut
Ceremony Honors Soldiers and Israel
On Thursday morning, BYDS students paid homage to the Israeli fallen soldiers with several performance readings and somber music-including a guitar duet by Jacob Trachtenberg on electric and Julia Strug playing acoustic and offering vocals for "Let It Be"-then transitioned to a colorful and dynamic celebration of Israel for Yom HaAtzmaut. The emcees for the event were Danielle Haas and Julia Minkowitz, who delivered background information and introductions to each part of the program. Among the readers and performances included Eliana Roisman reading the yizkor prayer, Rebekah Grzebinski and Daniel Johary reading Mi Sheberach, the Second Grade class singing Oseh Shalom and Eretz Israel, the Fourth Grade girls performing a blue/white-ribboned choreographed dance, the Fifth Grade students marching with Israeli flags, and the school's Choir concluding the program with Im Tirzu, Sisu et Yerushalayim, and Hatikva. Special guest speakers included Rabbi Rosen and, from the Israeli Consulate, Mrs. Maya Kadosh.
Wearing blue and white was the order of the day for all students, and the morning concluded in Pulaski-Rauch for a giant luncheon with students, teachers, and parents. We thank the many volunteers who helped with the event, especially Gavi Roisman, the BYDS PTO, Ms. Grinberg, Ms. Allie (the dance instructor), Ms. Gorme on the piano, and all the teachers who helped prepare the students for their roles and performances.

Earth Day at BYDS:
Pre-K Students Have Herbal Recipe for Business Success
Wednesday's version of Earth Day activities had a lot going for it all over BYDS-Dozens of students and families walked to school from the Bellaire Nature Center; classes planted flowers throughout the school's satellite gardens; students wore their earth colors; Fifth Grade students performed skits to represent their research into recycling ideas. The big event of the day, however, was the successful Pre-K Farmer's Market held under the carport area. The event took in $478.00, with all the money going back into the West End Garden, where the Pre-K students began their business venture two months ago by planting over ten different herbs in six different garden beds.
It was a true Farmer's Market, with the Pre-K students standing ready behind their tables of herb which were neatly bagged and tagged by volunteers earlier in the day. Each bag of herbs sold for $2.00 each. The students were the sellers and the cashiers, taking in the dollars and counting change for the many customers. Other students sold an official "Pre-K Farmer's Market Recipe Book," with such delicious entries as Fish Baked In a Cilantro and Nut Sauce, Parsely and Tahini Salad, Lavender Ice Cream, and they even got away with slipping in this one: Citron Mojito With Vodka.
The customer buzz was all positive-one mom quipped, "These kids are all ready for Harvard Business School!"
Many thanks go to Michelle Friedberg for overseeing the volunteer effort, and to parents Barbara Brounes, Jenni Aronson, Lydia Musher, and teachers Helena Zach and Monique Turner for taking on significant support roles in the Pre-K Farmer's Market project. Finally, we thank all the Pre-K teachers who stepped up big time to help with all the details leading to this successful event.

BYDS SENDS SEVEN STUDENTS TO THE DECATS SUMMER PROGRAM
Every year, Ms. Mesches, our Learning Specialist, and the teachers in grades 3 through 5 nominate extraordinary students to participate in a three week summer enrichment camp called DECATS [DeBusk Enrichment Center for Academically Challenging Scholars]. DECATS offers a unique opportunity for high-ability students to participate in an intensive three-week summer adventure of challenging and enriching coursework, nurturing the whole learner and fostering the leaders of tomorrow. The overriding purpose of the program is to identify and challenge young Scholars at a critical period in their lives.
The seven students attending DECATS are Julia Minkowitz, Jake Totz, Maya Zehavi (not pictured below), Hadar Zeevi, Carolyn Kessler, Daniel Malev, and Steven Wolf. Julia Minkowitz, of our fifth grade class, is attending DECATS for the third summer in a row. She follows in the footsteps of her sister, Samantha, and her brother Joseph, who are BYDS graduates. About her experience, Julia says, "Everyone will have a great time. There is something for everyone. The students will make lots of new friends. The camp has courses that you sign up for and my favorites were CSI and Mythology." Sign Language, Archeology, Toy Factory, Musical Theater, and Captivating Chemistry are some of the more original courses offered. This year they are even having "Minute to Win It!" The DECATS program is at Holy Spirit School and St. Pius School.
