BYDS Experiences Tu B'Shevat in a New Way

Beth Yeshurun Day School's celebration of the Holiday of Tu B'Shevat this year took a school-wide, educational turn, emphasizing the environment, creativity, science, language arts, and traditions, as well as a great field trip experience for many of our Elementary School students to the Bellaire Nature Center.

BYDS, in cooperation with the Bellaire Nature Center, integrated

religious studies with science, art, math and geography during the field trip with our First and Second Grade classes on Wednesday. There, the students were accompanied by master gardeners and environmental counselors led by Mrs. Anne Eisner, who is the activity director at the BNC. Students were exposed to maps, learned about agriculture, and also about animals that rely on trees.

In addition to the field trip, our Pre-K students learned environmentally-friendly language, like "reuse," "recycle," and "replace." Second Grade students completed their tree posters and constructions, a project that connected the celebration of trees with the extended members of their families. The front lobby this week and next is serving as the exhibit space for these wonderful family projects.

BYDS Authors and Editors

BYDS Resumes Lit Mag Project

All BYDS students will be claiming the title of "author" this year as a new student committee has formed to work on this year Literary Magazine, which will showcase a piece of student writing from every student. The bulk of the editing and publishing project rests with the all-important BYDS Editing Committee, under the supervision of Curriculum Specialist Cathryn Mellon. Students stay after school one day each week to review the submissions-each student in the school submits two pieces from which the committee will select the one that will be published.

There have been BYDS literary magazines before in the school's history, and they were outstanding publications-copies of them are still be consulted by students today, especially those on the Editing Committee, for the purpose of understanding layout, pagination, and design. So the students are very excited about returning to this large educational project. At this juncture, the Editing Committee members are reading and reviewing student submissions, and they are also involved in selecting a name for this year's publication. For more information on getting involved, contact Cathryn Mellon at school.
BYDS Teacher Workshop

BYDS Teachers Learn about Reaching Students with Attention Deficit Disorders

On Tuesday, February 7, BYDS Elementary General and Judaic Studies teachers attended a workshop conducted by three professionals in the field of addressing and managing attention deficit disorders (ADD/ADHD) in the classroom. The focus was on identifying characteristics of students exhibiting a range of attention issues along with how best to modify classroom strategies to reach these students. Topics included common difficulties students experience, classroom organization, organizing work tasks, organizing materials and supplies, and organizing time, in addition to the kinds of academic modifications that would help deliver more effective instruction to children who show ADD-like traits.

The Tuesday afternoon teacher learning program is part of the BYDS Faculty weekly training that goes on throughout the year; the programs begin after carpool and run from 3:30pm-5:00pm. This year there is variety of programs-for example, on some Tuesdays

outside professionals are called in to present; other Tuesdays may be led by an administrator, like ES Principal Mindy Rosenthal or ES Curriculum Specialist Cathryn Mellon. Some Tuesdays are devoted teacher team meetings. Next week Head of School Tom Elieff will be addressing the faculty on communication topics-pertaining to both using technology-based reporting and creating a positive classroom culture.

The presentation this past Tuesday on ADD/ADHD strategies included Yael Avivi, Ph.D. Clinical Psychologist with Weinberger, Black & Associates; Pam Esser, Executive Director of Attention Deficit Disorders Association Southern Region; and Kymn Harrison, MA, Consultant and Coach with Weinberger, Black & Associates.

CALL TO PARENTS

 5th Grade Mishloach Manot Project

Mishloach manot are gifts of food or drink that are sent to friends, relatives, neighbors, teachers, and any other acquaintances on Purim day, which falls on
March 8th this year. The mitzvah of giving mishloach manot derives from the Book of Esther, which instructs the Jewish people to observe the days of Purim "as days of feasting and gladness, and sending portions of food to one another, and gifts to the poor." It is meant to ensure that everyone has enough food for the Purim feast held later in the day, and to increase love and friendship among Jews.

This year, the 5th grade will offer mishloach manot gift bags for sale for only $2 and allow you to fulfill this important mitzvah. You can purchase mishloach manot bags for your child, his/her classmates, teachers, rabbis, or any BYDS staff.
Details on how to purchase them will be coming in the next few weeks, and sales will officially begin in mid-February. We look forward to your participation in this wonderful mitzvah project. If you have any questions, please contact Eleonora Leibman(
eleibman@gmail.com), Melissa Selzer (mcselz@sbcglobal.net), or Rina Camhi (rina@eldams.com.)
