Fifth Grade mitzvah a meaningful day of kindness

Our tradition teaches us much about honoring the elders: "You shall rise before the white-haired, and honor the face of the old man" (Leviticus 19:32). There is an interesting story aboutRabbi Yochanan, who used to rise before the heathen aged. When people asked Rabbi Yochanan why he would stand when he saw an elder, he answered:"How many experiences have passed over these!" (Talmud, Kiddushin 32b-33a  (

At Beth Yeshurun, our mission is to integrate Tikkun Olam (Healing the World) into our educational mission .  This week the 5th grade class had a meaningful day of showing their kindness as they sang to the Medallion residents and engaged the residents in a Chanukah-related art activity.  The students sang the blessings of the Holiday with traditional and new Holiday songs and cheered up the elders in the room.  They were led by our music teacher, Dora Lee Grinberg and pianist Bette Gorme.  Our Art teacher, Jodi Gold, instructed the residents and the students to decorate a tile with Holiday artifacts and special art crafts materials, and they enjoyed working together on this project.  We feel it is important for us, as a school, to grow our students and to help them understand the importance of maintaining inter-generational relations.  The students had conversations with their peer residents, learned about their life experiences, and exchanged blessings for the holidays.

We are proud of our 5th graders, who exemplified the mission of our school.

Happy Chanukah!

Renewing the Promise to return on

December 18-19 at CBY

Here's an important reminder to our day school community: Rabbi Druin will return to the Beth Yeshurun community on Sunday, December 18 and Monday, December 19 for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to fulfill one of the 613 commandments--writing the Torah. Rabbi Druin has already made a few visits to Beth Yeshurun this fall, and he spoke to our elementary student body in October this year. So many families have already taken part in this year-long project--both Mrs. Rosenthal and Mr. E and their families have taken part--and by all ac

counts people are saying the experience instills a strong connection to one's Judaism.

The Sunday, December 18 hours begin at 8:30am and run to 5:00pm; the Monday, December 19 hours go from 8:30am all the way up to 8:00pm. For an appointment, please contact Lisa Yambra at 713.666.1881 x304.  We hope you will seize the opportunity for this meaningful experience for the entire family.

Dress Code Message

Dear Parents,

I want to clarify the correct dress code for the school.  In the school building, students must only wear a BYDS sweatshirt or fleece jacket.  They may wear other jackets or sweatshirts outside at recess.  On Fridays, both the girls and boys must wear the dress uniform sweater.

All the dress code information is located in the parent handbook.  We have attached it for your convenience; as well are sending a copy home with your child.

Thank you for your cooperation.
