Parent Education Workshops Teach

Parents About Core Academic Programs

BYDS elementary teachers organized curricular workshop sessions for parents in November, and the results have been very successful.  The Parent Education Series classes are designed to give parents the full experience with their child's teachers on core subjects, such as math and reading. The workshops help parents understand the methods used each day in the classrooms for the school's celebrated Singapore Math program and the Columbia University's Readers and Writers Workshop approach. The parents receive curricular handouts and a powerpoint introduction, then it's down to work as the teachers will sit at the tables with their students' parents and go over problems and lessons, simulating the classroom small group setting.

In addition to the Parent Education Series, on Thursday, December 8, several BYDS teachers are setting up after school "tutorials" with parents, to go over any questions they have about the curriculum: Julie Rubenstein will help parents of K/1/2 children; Lindsay Tavor will do third grade; Kelli Sydow, fourth grade; and Eve Zehavi, fifth grade. Be watching for these tutorial offerings in your child's teacher newsletters. Alongside the parent education program, among the curricular strengthening measures being implemented this year include a full-scale curricular re-alignment and a full re-articulation of the objectives, skills, content, methodologies, and benchmark standards throughout the K-5 program. We hope you can come in next week and do some learning with one of our BYDS teachers!

BYDS Receives Significant Grant from

Herzstein Foundation

BYDS is thrilled and honored to announce the news of a grant from the Albert and Ethel Herzstein Charitable Foundation in the amount of $25,000 to underwrite the science curriculum and the new science lab classroom.  This grant marks the second significant foundation grant awarded to Beth Yeshurun Day School this year, giving the school important additional support for its Build Our Future campaign. Build Our Future remains a chief priority for the school, with a current aim now to raise an additional $500,000 to cover the full construction and financing costs of the new educational facility.

The Herzstein Foundation continues the work of Albert and Ethel Herzstein by supporting charitable efforts that offer individuals and organizations opportunities for advancement through education, enrichment of the human spirit and quality of life in our society.  All of us--teachers, students, parents, staff, and Board members--thank the Herzstein Foundation for their generous gift and acknowledgment of the educational strength and promise of Beth Yeshurun Day School.

Garden Volunteer Opportunity for BYDS Families-Monday, Dec. 5, at 9am in the West End Garden.

Please grab your garden gloves and come join us on Monday, beginning at 9am, for some light garden work-whatever the time you can devote will be much appreciated! Fifteen minutes, a half hour... your hands will be most helpful to us as we continue to improve the soil composition, mark out a design for the upcoming cool weather flowers we'll be planting, and of course churn up the garden beds in advance of next Thursday's Pre-K and K planting day. If you can bring any of the following items,  that would help us out a great deal:

·         A bag or two of top soil, compost, plant mix, or manure. [Typically, these bags run about 2 or 3 dollars a bag, with a little more per bag for plant mix-we'll have a wheel barrow that we can take out to your car and haul it in for you.]

·         Bring a tray (usually 8 to 20 plants in a tray) of cool weather flowers, like geraniums, sweet peas, and snapdragons; the K students will be planting these later in the week.

·         Garden tools-if you have anything garden related that you can donate to BYDS, this will help us out tremendously!

Thanks so much!  -- Mr. E.

KHOU Investigative Reporter

Speaks to BYDS Students

KHOU Investigative reporter Mark Greenblatt spoke to our students during Kabbalat Shabbat this afternoon about the importance of doing kind acts and also about confronting those who do the wrong thing-students were able to ask questions and to share their thoughts on what they could do to help others in need.  Mr. Greenblatt's appearance at Beth Yeshurun Day School is part of an on-going series of bring community leaders and professionals to Beth Yeshurun Day School as an outreach component of our weekly Kabbalat Shabbat service on Friday afternoons.
