New First In Math Program
Bolsters Core Math Skills
BYDS now provides its 4th and 5th Grade students with the First in Math on-line program to build essential math skills through an exciting game-based approach that is loads of fun, while it challenges students to whatever extent they desire.
The typical structure of the game is to present each student with a pre-test assessment to test proficiency. There are modules that provide a unique way for students to experience the type of problems found in standardized tests. Students solve problems from nine categories that tie to national standards. "Workout Gyms" build automaticity with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts, and progress to include fractions, decim als and integers. After completing certain Skill Set requirements, students can play "Bonus Games," serving as incentives that encourage students to continue to achieve.
Already in just two days, BYDS students have solved over 7,000 problems at school and at home with First in Math! |

Meteorologist Educates BYDS Students on Weather and Science
Channel 2 Meteorologist Anthony Yanez visited our Elementary School students as our featured Kabbalat Shabbat community speaker last Friday. Students learned about water, the water cycle, about storms, and he presented some very good safety reminders and tips when it comes to heavy rains and lightning. In an effort to illustrate lightning, he lifted a student's hair to show the way electricity can run through objects like trees and houses.

Mr. Yanez is but one example of our community speaker program at BYDS, bringing prominent members and experts to our school to educate students in a variety of areas-science, culture, arts, and leadership. If you have suggestions for future speakers, please contact Mr. Sharon Knafo. |
