Opening Day a Happy Day for BYDS Teachers and Students
BYDS teachers and students launched into their classroom routines for the year on Wednesday morning, which was day one in the brand new educational facility. An Opening School Assembly for the Elementary School students in the Reiches Multi-Purpose Room at 9:00am was the occasion for Principal Mindy Rosenthal to introduce new teachers, talk about student routines, give a pep talk on respectful behavior and confirm school uniform rules. The Assembly concluded with an introduction to all new BYDS students, who were introduced by their teachers. Early Childhood students had a great day on Wednesday, learning classroom routines and even doing rhythms with Marilyn Albert on the newly tiled Snap City floor.

BYDS Students Learn About Wheelchair Users from Special Guest
On Thursday our BYDS Elementary students received a very important educational experience when Abraham Hausman-Weiss, 13, visited with the school in Freedman-Levit to answer their questions about wheelchair users. The session was arranged in order to give our students a bit of preparatory understanding of children who use wheelchairs, in anticipation of the arrival of fellow students Peter and Aaron Berry in September.
Abraham Hausman-Weiss is new to Houston; his father is the new rabbi at Emanu El. Abraham will be attending 8th grade at Pin Oak School next week. Abraham, who is a very athletic boy who loves basketball now, was born with Spinal Bifida; he has been in a wheelchair since he was 17 months. BYDS students were very inquisitive and they asked questions for over an hour. Here are some of the questions our students asked:
· What kind of sports does he play?
· How does he go to sleep?
· How does he get into airplanes?
· Does he feel anything in his legs?
· How was he treated in school-did he get bullied? (No-he didn't.)
· How did he get around friends' houses when they weren't wheelchair accessible?
Our students were very respectful and curious throughout the presentation. We thank the Hausman-Weiss family for allowing Abraham to share his experiences with our community.
