 ::: Mexican Folk Art :::

Collecting and selling Mexican Folk Art has been a great passion of mine for many years. It is often referred to as objects created by common people for religious or decorative purposes. In the Mexican culture, images most common are La Virgin de Guadalupe, Sacred Hearts, Loteria, Frida, and Dia De Los Muertos, lately it is fun to also see images of luchadores, & 50's era movie stars.

La Fina Cocina has extended there product offering to include unique designs. Please join me in collecting this great art form, and share with your family. They will learn to appreciate the richness of our cultura.

If you visit Chicago, do take the time to visit the Mexican Museum of Art. They house the largest collection of Mexican Art in the United States. It is impressive!

Sabes Que?

The celebration of Easter week (Semana Santa) is almost as spectacular & interesting as Day of the Dead. It's another holiday based on the Catholic religious calendar. Folk art and holiday foods take center stage as families reunite to eat, pray and explode huge papier mache effigies of Judas, the man who betrayed Christ. Judas (pronounced hoo-das) burning is the highlight of Easter week!

Sopes
Sopes are little fried masa cakes and are topped with savory meats and veggies. Sopes make a great appetizer because of their small size. Make them extra small and add minimal toppings for a perfect finger food. Or make sopes your main dish by topping them high with large chunks of cooked meats and veggies.

Ingredients:
  • 3 cups masa harina
  • 2 cups warm water
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • Oil for frying
  • Shredded beef or chicken
  • Salsa or Pico de Gallo
Preparation:

Mix together masa, water and salt until a soft dough forms. Add in additional water by the tablespoonful if dough seems too dry. Knead on a lightly floured surface until dough is softened, about 5 minutes.

Make small balls out of the dough. 1-inch for small (think large marble,) 2-inch for regular size (think walnut,) 3-inch for large sopes (think golf ball.)

Press each ball by hand to about 1/2 inch thick. Or sandwich a ball between two pieces of parchment paper and press with a plate.

Fry in a 1/4 inch of hot oil on both sides until lighlty golden brown and cooked through.

Top with shredded chicken or beef, cheese, and your favorite salsa or pico de gallo. Feel free to add other of your favorite toppings!
