Host a site for a September Saturday of service
 

 Do you have service that NKU students can assist you with on September 29? Can you provide a volunteer site for these students to work in? If so, sign up for NKU's Service on Saturday. Connect with students at NKU career fairs this fall
 

NKU's Career Development Center is hosting two career fairs this fall.  On Wednesday, September 26, join the CDC for a Haile/ US Bank College of Business job fair from 3 to 6 p.m. Contact Amanda Meeker at meekera1@nku.edu for more information or to register. A STEM-Nonprofit/ Government career fair will be held on Wednesday, October 3 from 4 to 6 p.m. For more information or to register, contact Julie Stockman at stockmanj1@nku.edu. The cost of each fair is $100. Also, join Norse Recruiting, the CDC's online recruiting database, for access to students of all majors. To register, visit the Norse Recruiting website.
State summit on philanthropy
 
September 19-20, Downtown Lexington Hyatt. 

Mark your calendars for the fourth annual Summit on Philanthropy presented by the Kentucky Philanthropy Initiative. Workshops on the 19th will include a CLE-CPA credit workshop presented by the Bluegrass Community Foundation on estate planning and tax issues, the Endow Kentucky tax credit and the Transfer of Wealth Kentucky study and a governance and leadership workshop presented by the Center for Nonprofit Excellence of Louisville.  Email clabes@insightbb.com for more details or to add your name to the mailing list for registration materials.

 

NKU welcomes new president
 

Geoffrey Mearns, Northern Kentucky University's fifth president, took office August 1. Mearns succeeds Dr. James Votruba, who retired July 31 after holding the position for 15 years. Prior to coming to NKU, Mearns served as the provost and senior vice president for academic affairs for Cleveland State University beginning in 2010. Do you need volunteers for upcoming events? Get connected with NKU students at the Northern Kentucky Leadership Institute's Service Fair on August 22 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the NKU Student Union. A new school year, a new lecture series

 

Six@Six is a community lecture series sponsored by the Scripps Howard Center for Civic Engagement made up of six talks on six evenings throughout the school year. Each of the lectures will start at 6 p.m. and cost $6 (buy a season pass for $30; students are free). The interactive and engaging lectures cover a diversity of topics ranging from the dark-side of the life of Machiavelli to the effects of consuming alcohol and energy drinks in combination. This season will begin with a lecture evaluating the constitutionality of the Emancipation Proclamation on September 19. For more information, visit the Six@Six web page.

 
NKU celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

 

From September 15 to October 15, NKU will celebrate the National Hispanic Heritage Month. This year, Mariela Dabbah, award-winning and best-selling author and CEO of Latinos in College, will be the keynote speaker. Dabbah has previously presented at Procter & Gamble, Harvard, and the National Association for Bilingual Education, among many other companies, organizations, and conferences, as a nationally sought-after speaker.
