Join Us for SEPTA's Informational
Programs: 
SEPTA offers informational programs featuring speakers who are experts in their fields. Please join us to learn more about important topics that our members have identified as being of interest.  This year's remaining speaker series programs are:
Mon. Dec. 7th - AD/HD - Practical Guidance for Home & School. Presenter: Dr. Benard Dreyer (NYU Professor & Pediatrics)               
Wed. Feb. 10th - Organizational Skills - Helping  Learners Develop Skills For Success. Presenter: Donna Goldberg       
Thurs. April 15th - Stress in Your Child's Life. Presenter: Dr. Caren Baruch Feldman                
Mon. May 24th - Keys to Social Success. Presenter: Dr. Marcia Eckerd                 
SEPTA programs are held in the Hommocks School Library at 7:30 p.m.  Our programs are free and all are welcome to attend.
Tuesday - Nov. 10th - Secondary Parents Networking Meeting.  Join other parents of Middle and High School children with learning differences and share common concerns and strategies. 7:30 p.m. Hommocks Library Presentation Room.

SEPTA Holds Program on Dyslexia
On October 21st - SEPTA hosted "Demystifying Dyslexia - Diagnosis & Remediation". Danielle Mowery of the New York Chapter of the International Dyslexia Association discussed the common signs of dyslexia (a common reading disorder affecting 15-20 percent of the population), explained the basics of the identification and diagnosis process and steps that can be taken toward remediation - teaching a dyslexic child to read and write.  The meeting was well attended and many questions were asked.     
Did you know that under the Individuals with Disabilities Act, dyslexia is listed as one type of specific learning disability?  If a child has a specific learning disability that adversely affects his educational performance, he might be eligible to receive "specially designed instruction" through special education.  Want to learn about dyslexia?  Try these resources:

The Mamaroneck School District is offering a workshop on "language based learning disabilities" on February 9th - please save the date and come to learn and ask questions.  Click Here for Information  
Practical Advice: Do you have questions about your child's reading?  Have you spoken with your child's teacher? If not, maybe you should.  You may also benefit from reviewing the school district's Academic Intervention Services plan which has district benchmarks for reading at various grades in elementary school. Go to Curriculum & Instruction and look on the left for Academic Intervention Services.
Are you familiar with what students are to be learning? You can review New York's learning standards and core curriculum for grades K-12 by visiting the NYSED Website
Calling All Dads!  Join the Fathers' Club - the Father's Club is a supportive group of dads of children with learning differences or special needs.  They meet for conversation and to share experiences and advice in a friendly atmosphere. Sam Jensen is SEPTA liaison and you may contact him to learn more.  Email Sam Jensen.
