SEPTA Holds Program on Dyslexia
On October 21st - SEPTA hosted "Demystifying Dyslexia - Diagnosis & Remediation". Danielle Mowery of the New York Chapter of the International Dyslexia Association discussed the common signs of dyslexia (a common reading disorder affecting 15-20 percent of the population), explained the basics of the identification and diagnosis process and steps that can be taken toward remediation - teaching a dyslexic child to read and write. The meeting was well attended and many questions were asked.
Did you know that under the Individuals with Disabilities Act, dyslexia is listed as one type of specific learning disability? If a child has a specific learning disability that adversely affects his educational performance, he might be eligible to receive "specially designed instruction" through special education. Practical Advice: Do you have questions about your child's reading? Have you spoken with your child's teacher? If not, maybe you should. You may also benefit from reviewing the school district's Academic Intervention Services plan which has district benchmarks for reading at various grades in elementary school. Go to Curriculum & Instruction and look on the left for Academic Intervention Services.
Are you familiar with what students are to be learning? You can review New York's learning standards and core curriculum for grades K-12 by visiting the NYSED Website.
