 Winter 2010

A very merry Christmas to you all...
Greetings!

It is a beautiful winter wonderland here in North Wales, though we appreciate this has a significant impact on many organisations that could do without the added stress at the moment. For our part we are reflecting on the past year and looking to a prosperous 2011, and send our best wishes to all of you for the new year.

Retirement Timebomb

On 1st October 2011, employees will be able to work for as long as they want as the default retirement age is scrapped and "official" retirement age will become a thing of the past.  Our expert Judith Cork has been keeping up with the legislation and has carried out research in England and Wales to establish just how ready people are for the big step....

Judith's research gave a snapshot of retirement readiness in the light of the coalition Government bringing forward the review of the default retirement age.  The questionnaire asked respondents to consider five key areas of "retirement readiness" (work, leisure/activity, relationships, income and planning).

Judith Cork

Judith says: "The two sections on Work and Leisure involved respondents considering whether to retire fully, part-time, look at other employment possibilities and generally think about the balance between work and leisure time.  Many indicated they had given little or no thought to these areas. Bearing in mind how poorly some people are planning, providing more information and support about the range of options open to older workers, and helping them to plan a fulfilling older age outside the workplace, could provide mutual benefits to employers and employees alike."

At BeeCLD we've always seen performance management as crucial to a high performing organisation. This legislation will make it even more important for managers to engage in an on-going dialogue with staff about their performance and future plans.  It may even require a difficult conversation!

If employers take responsibility and gear up now by helping their workers with their later life planning, this should in turn help them with their internal workforce planning issues which will become increasingly important if they have an older workforce.

BeeCLD provide support in the following areas:

  •      'Making difficult conversations easy' workshop
  •      Performance management, competence development and appraisal training
  •      Workforce & retirement planning and retirement coaching

Mark has been reading...

Lots in the news ridiculing the public sector for spending money training people on how to have 'difficult conversations'. We though it was worth commenting on.

Having difficult conversations is, by definition, difficult, so people avoid them. Even though having them can save thousands of pounds, improve communication, morale and ultimately lead to better performance. Avoiding them on the other hand, can cost many thousands along with decreasing morale, lack of trust and ultimately worse performance.

The cost of training people will be paid back many times over if it gives people the skills, but more importantly, the confidence, to have that difficult conversation.

Sara is writing...

Sara is writing a chapter for a book entitled 'Leadership as emotional labour - Management and the managed heart' edited by her close friend and colleague Dr Marian Iszatt White of Lancaster University Management School.

Sara's chapter synthesises two areas of theory, Emotional Labour and Transactional Analysis, to explore the factors that determine levels of emotional dissonance in leadership. Watch this space as her findings develop.

Mark is reflecting...

On nearly 18 years as 'Beehive'. When I set up in business I chose the name Beehive because for me it was a metaphor of organisational effectiveness, efficiency, collaboration and individual responsibility.

When Sara and I formed the ltd company we kept the name Beehive because we shared so many values sustainability being key.

Bees are instrumental in cross fertilisation and many of our clients value the opportunity to get together to share best practice and the challenges they face.

Our clients have been many and varied, from global management consultancy and blue chip organisations, to local authorities and SME's in the UK and internationally.

We look forward to working with you.

Stress-management
With the pressure on everyone at the moment to make savings, cut costs and strive for even more efficiency people are beginning to feel the strain.
We've developed a new take on dealing with those stresses and strains and have a unique approach to
Working Towards Well Being
...
BeehivePoster
This is an approach to stress management that works in bite sized chunks of 90 minutes a week over an 8 week period. It is based on our Sara's own experiences if dealing with an inordinate amount of pressure over the past two years and before, so we know it works!

And it also draws upon much of our combined knowledge of physiology, mindfulness, TA, NLP, reverse therapy, exercise and diet.

Email sara@beecld.co.uk to find out more. We can also run the programme in-house over a two day period, but feel the bite-sized chunks make it more user friendly!

Quote...

"I have never considered myself for years. I am my job, I am a parent, but it was my personal well-being that I hadn't considered"

"I had never realised I was stressed! This programme has helped me realise this and given me the awareness and tools to deal with it"

We rely on word of mouth as much as anything to develop new business. If you can recommend our work to a new client and they commission us we will give you a free workshop for a part of your organisation or a free coaching session for you or someone you choose.
