Shabda Yoga Class
Tonight at 5:15pm!

Shabda Yoga ClassEvery Monday during the month of May, at 5:15pm, we will be holding weekly Shabda Yoga classes. Shabda Yoga means the Yoga of the sung Word (the Logos that manifests itself through the archetype of music). Together we will attune our vocal apparatuses to the sublime resonance of the Divine through a singing series of meditative mantras with musical accompaniment, led by Shivani. We will be guided through a series of soothing and ego-shattering intonations to excite the kundalini energy. We will harmonize with the primordial sound, AUM, perform a number of ashram classics, and drown out the noise of egoic interference in the interplay of silence and heavenly melodies. This will be a class of song-singing, but we encourage students at all levels of singing capacity to join us.

Prepare yourself for the experience of communal harmony through harmonization. We'll see you tonight!

Documentary Films

This month officially commences our in depth study into mythtory, the myth that is our history (which is itself a mystery). We will be diving into the depths of the archetypal superconscious with the Joseph Campbell series, Mythos, and uncovering the roots of our mother civilization in The Story of India.

Mythos - Joseph CampbellIn Mythos, Joseph Campbell takes us on a (hero's) journey through the myths that have shaped culture throughout the entire scope of recorded history. We will traverse the terrain of the ancient world, from Greece to India, collecting gems of wisdom, going fishing with Indra's net, and follow the ancient chakra maps that will lead us to the hidden treasure of archetypal insight. Filmed during the last year of his life, Campbell shares with us a lifetime of discoveries gleaned through his own hero's journey.

The Story of IndiaMother India, the cradle of our cultural civilization, has a mysterious and profound background that begs to be rediscovered. The Story of India will shed light on the rich history of this magnificent civilization--whose roots stretch back to prehistory and whose limbs still reach out in postmodern society. We will travel all over the Indian subcontinent, visiting holy pilgrimage sites and searching for the secret recipe of soma. We will also learn what led to the downfall of ancient Indian societies and how this pertains to our current global, ecological catastrophe. Shunyamurti will supplement this beautiful six-part series with his accounts--and anecdotes--of his decade-long residence in the holy land.

Danger: El Topo
--this is not a film fit for human consumption

Warning: El TopoWarning: This film is extremely offensive. There is absolutely no excuse for watching this film. Do not come to this screening if you are sensitive to disturbing images of Real One. There is a surfeit of blood, body parts, violence, sexuality, and deformity.

The film is horrible. Yet, it is a modern classic as well, a spiritual anti-hero's journey, the ultra-left hand path into the hell realm of the unconscious and through the wormhole of the archetypal inferno to a transcendent immanence that remains bound to kali yuga, but offers the only vision of salvation that the contemporary consciousness can envision. It is Alejandro Jodorowsky's masterpiece, a destabilizing anachronistic post-Freudian Western myth of psychic development through encounter with ultimate horror, deceit, seduction, perversion, and literal castration--all the joys of postmodern life.

By carrying the fantasy of unbridled jouissance to its farthest reaches, the film deconstructs the psychotic logic of fantasy itself, and leads the viewer to finally satiate the salivating lower death drive, leaving one in exhausted vairagya, and at last ready to truly enter into the mystery of the underworld cavern in which divine rebirth becomes possible.

Here is a true mythical journey for the end of our degraded age. Its message is profoundly Christian--in the best sense of being a living reconstruction of the Atonement. For some, it may provide the only kind of path back to a saving faith that is still open to a cynical and loveless ego in this materialist age of godless narcissism. Because of that, the price of the horror is not too much to pay. We are seeing our own sins writ large on the screen, and through identification, which is the essence of all faith, we can finally die upward for our own karma, through the crucifixion of this transcendental cowboy, the ego ideal who has been sent to free us. Come watch this only if you dare. Don't say you weren't warned!

Schedule: Saturday, May 19, at 7:00pm

Suggested Donation: 10,000 colones (to help support the Institute and ashram)

Way! No-Way! Wu Wei!
The Paradox of "Seva Saves"

Ego Death and Divine Rebirth Retreat Paradox is an impossible concept, or at least a concept of the impossible to conceive. It is the pulsating heart of all our problems, and it smiles sardonically like Schrödinger's cat at us in every conscious moment of our lives. In it, we find both joy and anxiety. It is the spirit of the spiritual journey, the warp and the woof of wu-wei. As it turns out, paradox is also the soul of true seva (service). The discovery of this paradox was the essential theme of Sat Yoga's recent community retreat: "Seva Saves: The Path of Karma Yoga."
