Zorba the Greek

Zorba the Greek

A black-and-white film, with no special effects, no explosions, no nude scenes...a complete bore by current Hollywood standards...yet Zorba the Greek is perhaps the greatest film ever made. It is at moments too touching and heart-wrenching to be bearable, yet too subtle for many to even get the point. It expresses a profound sensitivity to the authentically sublime tragicomedy of human existence that our fallen culture can no longer grasp. The acting in this film is truly larger than life. The role of Zorba, a man's man if there ever was one, has gained Anthony Quinn deserved immortality. But there is nothing lesser in the acting of Alan Bates, in the role of the bookish and neurotic "boss"; and the power of the performance of Irene Papas is equally unsurpassable. The same goes for the bit players depicting the consciousness of an exhausted traditional village culture in rural Crete. Often the psychological point is made with only a word, or a look, or a moment of silence--yet volumes are spoken in such gems of theatrical mastery. A film like this shows us what the power of theater really is, and how depths of human essence can be explored through the visual from angles that escape even the most masterful literature. Kazantzakis' novel Zorba the Greek is one of the great human testaments of the twentieth century. This film, unlike most others, truly does justice to the book, and demonstrates that the spark of compassion, nobility, aspiration, joy, love, wholeness, and awareness and acceptance of the existential absurdity of egoic life are not yet completely dead. From extraordinary cinematic poetry like Zorba, the inspiration to commit to the most impossible, utopian, yet utterly thrilling project of human transformation, can be ignited. Come join us for the full catastrophe...and lets dance a new world into being!.

New Teaching by Shunyamurti

Beyond the Singularity: This is the End of What World?

There comes a point in the journey of the unfoldment of consciousness when every narrative appears ridiculous. This includes so-called scientific, philosophic, and psychoanalytic discourses. It includes, therefore, even this sort of discourse about the inanity of all discourse. The symbolic veil over the Real shreds itself like an oppressed monk setting himself on fire.

In one of the late Terence McKenna's most famous discourses about a DMT trip he took, he emphasizes how elvish voices kept telling him, "don't abandon yourself to amazement." I found that amazing, in fact utterly astonishing. He goes on to say that they commanded him to pay close attention. But one can both pay attention and be in a state of full-on astonishment at the same time. Some have taken literally his advice not to give way to amazement. But that is more often the command of the superego. How can we not be in amazement, astonishment, at every moment? Astonishment is what creates natural DMT in the brain. In fact, there is a lovely book that emerged from the Kashmir Shaiva yoga tradition, probably a thousand years ago, recently translated into English, and given the title The Yoga of Delight, Wonder, and Astonishment. In this teaching, otherwise known as The Vigyana Bhairava, it is revealed that the most direct path to Liberation is precisely through surrendering to astonishment.

Serenity--and Shaktipat!

Serenity--and Shaktipat! "It was like discovering Shangri-La!" gushed one participant of the spiritual retreat that began on July 29 when she first saw the panoramic view of the Sat Yoga Ashram on the sacred mountain of Arunachala in Costa Rica. "It was pure magic and delight." The whole group agreed.

The retreatants first received a tour of Mahatma Lodge, the gardens, and their rustic but luxurious lodging. Soon they were ready to drop the ego mind and abide in sweet inner peace as the eternal Self...
