August Movie Night: The Sage of Arunachala

The Sage of ArunachalaSri Ramana Maharshi (Maha means great, Rishi means enlightened teacher) is the awe inspiring sage whose Presence graced the renowned sacred Arunachala hill during much of the 20th century. He was known throughout India and to many in the rest of the world as the silent sage whose peaceful presence and powerful gaze changed the lives of the many who came into his Presence. He encouraged people to look within and discover whether they were only the body or the eternal formless Self within. His powerful example and inner influence led many people to realize the Self as the pure awareness, beyond the transient thoughts, emotions, and body.

Like so many great ones who come down to this Earth on a divine mission, he was born a seemingly ordinary mortal, but at a certain point in his life, he mobilized the courage to pierce the illusion, or Maya. The ego fell away and in an instantaneous realization, the Supreme Self emerged. From then on, there was no longer a person functioning through the body, but instead the radiant intelligences of the timeless Atman, the Divine Awareness revealed the potential for Grace that is within all. There was no desire for enlightenment. Instead, the Sun of Being arose spontaneously, without the help of an external guru and without the usual period of spiritual striving.

Join us for the story of this extraordinary illumined sage, who is an inspiration and source of wisdom for the Sat Yoga community.

Prema-culture Book Group: Signs of Meaning in the Universe

Signs of Meaning in the Universe
After reading The Human Nature of Birds, we have learned that birds,--as well as insects, dolphins, apes, and all animals in general--are not simply hard-wired, instinct driven machines. Rather, they are thoughtful, intelligent beings that exhibit a high level of awareness and consciousness. Furthering our study of the role of the observer in the realm of science, of consciousness in the biological world, we turn to a much more in-depth dialogue on the issue at the most fundamental level.

Signs of Meaning in the Universe presents a cogent and well-informed discussion of a controversial but rapidly expanding field known as "biosemiotics." Author Jesper Hoffmeyer, doctor of biochemistry and professor emeritus at the Biological Institute, University of Copenhagen, elucidates the science of signs, semiotics, in a clear and straightforward fashion, and boldly faces the materialist dictum of neo-Darwinism by reexamining the role of consciousness in the theory of evolution. Hoffmeyer's wide-ranging body of knowledge leads to a thought-provoking discussion, drawing from the psychoanalytic theory of Jacques Lacan, the self-referential paradoxes in Western logic exposed by Kurt Gödel, and much, much more.

In short, Signs of Meaning in the Universe provides an alternative evolutionary explanation to neo-Darwinian theory, and is quite impressive in its many insights and revelations. It is a boon to biology buffs, a light for linguistic lovers, and an interest to anyone who has been looking for signs of meaning in the universe.

If this bio-semiotic study interests you, we warmly encourage you to join our ongoing Prema-culture course dedicated to the restoration of humanity to its divine roots,  to understanding the Mind of Nature, and to re-creating a deeper and  more wholisitic connection to all of God's various forms and expressions.

This course is open for enrolled students. If you have not completed our Free Sat Yoga Orientation Program and wish to join this study group, please call 2288-3294 to begin your enrollment process. Thank you.

Coming Out of Lostness

All of us are emanations of the divine light and the oneness of the supreme love. But the ego plays hide-and-seek with that light and that love and eventually the ego is lost more often than it is found. If we are going to get out of the game of lost and found, we have to do something that the Sufis call dhikr or zikr, which is the practice of the remembrance of God.

The Sufis aren't the only ones who talk about remembering God. This is a universal practice across the different wisdom traditions. But the Sufis have gone into this idea much deeper than many of the other traditions, and so this month we're beginning the study of the Sufi wisdom tradition. Getting deeper into this sacred idea of zikr is very important. It is an essential subject for us, because the whole question of liberation from the ego drives revolves around whether you are able to remember God, and how deeply. What does that really mean, "remember"? When did you meet God in the first place? Many people will say: "How can I remember if He is a stranger to me?"
