John 14: 6 I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Have you ever wonder why Jesus says this? Wouldn't it be easier if Jesus said I am a way a truth and a life? Our society has told us that there are many ways to heaven and as long as you believe in God you will be going to heaven. In the next few sessions we are going to discover why this is simply not true and not a good way of thinking.
So let's start, Jesus claims I am the way. Why is it important that Jesus is the way to heaven and not just a way? I want to start by looking at what the implications of Jesus being a way would look like. Imagine joining a race and the person that has called everyone together says to line up, you might ask "where do we line up?" the starter would reply "I don't know," then you ask "which direction are we going" and his reply is "any direction you want to go." This wouldn't be a very fun race because everyone would be going out of control and no one would know if they won, therefore everyone would claim to be a winner. Now on the surface this may seem like a good idea "everyone is a winner." However there is a major problem with this as we think about eternity. If every way and every direction is correct then everyone is right. This would give us no room for moral values, and would ultimately make us our own God and our own Judge. That would leave room for people like Hitler and Bin Laden to be in heaven because these people believed in what they were doing and believed that they were right for what they did. So the implications for A way to heaven is everyone gets in and we can live whatever life we want. Jesus said I am THE way.
In our next study we are going to look at why Jesus said he is THE truth.
