Greetings from Kindle Nation and BookLending.com!

Kindle owners don't need Bob Dylan to tell us that, where books are concerned, "the times they are a-changing."

It is written everywhere, and our most recent reminder came in the Winter 2012 Kindle Nation Citizen Survey, where readers made it clear that friends, family, colleagues, and sites like Kindle Nation Daily and BookLending.com have replaced many of the old gatekeepers in influencing how we discover new sources of reading pleasure.

And for nearly a year now our reading choices have been enriched by our partnership with  bestselling author and Five-Star Fiction curator M.J. Rose, who has joined us this week to serve up a new selection of great reading for great readers, each introduced with a brief but intriguing excerpt and a personal note from the author.

Enjoy!

A Note to Readers from the Author

Dear Reader,
Mary Burton
Mary Burton

When a woman's body is found staked to the ground and surrounded by a ring of salt, homicide detective Daniel Rokov knows he has a deranged killer stalking the streets. Prominent defense attorney Charlotte Wellington barely can savor a brilliant courtroom summation when a man from her dark past promises silence in exchange for a favor. A killer sees himself as judge, jury and executioner called to rid the world of evil witches and Charlotte is next on his list. BEFORE SHE DIES is a fast-paced ride with a collection of characters that are among my very favorite.

Excerpt from the Book

He Is Their Judge...Jury...and Executioner.

No one knows about defense attorney Charlotte Wellington's murdered sister, or about her childhood spent with the carnival that's just arrived in town. For Charlotte, what's past is past. But others don't agree. And as a madman's body count rises, she and Detective Daniel Rokov are drawn into a mission that's become terrifyingly personal...

At last, she is within his reach. All his victims deserve their fate, but her guilt is greatest. And with every scream, he will make her see what it means to suffer and repent...before she dies.

Dear Reader,

Daniel Palmer
Daniel Palmer
In a world saturated with technology, we're often unaware of the potential deep and broad implications of the use-or misuse-of seemingly harmless communication. We all need to be aware of how vulnerable our reputations are to online attacks; each of us can be helpless when subjected to this kind of assault. I worked with a former SEAL and current FBI special agent in researching HELPLESS, and learned a great deal, which I incorporated into the story-and into my personal life. I also hope parents can learn important lessons from the story to help them protect their kids.

Dear Reader,

NATHAN'S RUN was my first published novel. It started with the idea of putting someone in the position of having to choose between doing what was right or doing his job. It had to be a binary choice. At the time when I wrote the manuscript, I was tangentially involved with oversight for the juvenile detention center in my community. When I saw the looks on those kids faces--particularly the young ones--I knew I had my story. To this day, I think it's pretty darned strong.

 Excerpt from the Book

The pictures stopped when Nathan opened his eyes. As the water and grime and Ricky's blood ran down his body and swirled into the drain, he wiggled his toes in the soapy froth and tried to smile. A smile makes the saddest man a little happier, his father used to say, but had he ever felt this much sadness?

"God I miss you," Nathan said aloud, his voice a whisper. He turned his face toward the ceiling.

"I'm in so much trouble, Dad. Please help me. You've got to help me."

The emotions Nathan had fought so long to control broke free all at once. He started to cry, silently at first, and then, dropping his chin to his chest and covering his eyes with his palms, he gave into long, miserable sobs.

A Note to Readers from the Author

Deby Eisenberg
Deby Eisenberg
Dear Reader,

A beautiful young couple are brought together by a shared experience. They fall passionately in love, but become separated by the happenstance of life, with each secretly forever longing to be reunited . . . This is a theme that pervades so much of the iconic literature we love and it is one that has always captured me. With Pictures of the Past, I wanted to create historical fiction that would inform, as well as entertain, that would broaden the mind and open the heart. I knew that I wanted to write a novel that would begin in contemporary times, but would alternate with events through the decades from WWII, taking the reader from the mansions of Chicago and Newport, Rhode Island to the European Capitals. Traveling through the years with Taylor and Sarah, experiencing their challenges with them, I hoped readers could gain insight into larger events played out on the world stage.

An Excerpt from the Novel

And then he saw her. She was seated halfway across the extensive lobby, and although most of her back was to him, when she turned her head slightly, a glimpse of her distinctive profile and her shock of blond hair made his heart race. How could this be that she actually made it to America before him? Had she returned on the speedier Normandie? He supposed that it was possible, that her father may have come to his senses more quickly than even Taylor had anticipated. And although it would be a coincidence that she would be here at the Waldorf=Astoria, since he had not formulated and certainly had not articulated any such plans, this would be the natural choice for a family such as the Bergers when traveling to New York. All of these thoughts delayed him half a minute in approaching her, and just as she was within his reach, one or two more seconds and his arm would have circled her waist, she rose and approached another man almost in a run. And now that man was experiencing the bliss of her embrace, his ecstatic face in Taylor's full view, his hands resting on that very portion of the small of her back that he had been targeting. He was confused. Who was this-a relative she had never mentioned-another family friend or business associate? But it could not be either, holding her like that, kissing her with his same passion and then twirling her. Twirling her. Thank God, twirling her. For then he saw she was not Sarah at all. She was yet another blond young woman, not even really as soft and pretty as his girl.

What The Reviewers Say:

"PICTURES OF THE PAST is a thriller spinning around World War II as a painting is accused of being stolen...Following a romance surrounding the painting, Deby Eisenberg crafts a unique and thoughtful story of the time. PICTURES OF THE PAST is a fine and much recommended read for historical fiction collections,"

--Midwest Book Review
