A Note to Readers from the Author

Dear Readers:

I started writing, inventing characters who questioned things that I'd been

Wendy Dubow Polins

thinking about. I'm an architect and art historian and had been studying mysticism. One day, while on my way to a lecture at MIT, I found myself listening to a talk about Albert Einstein and his theories on Time. That's when everything came together for me. I realized that whether you're an ancient mystic, a cutting edge physicist, or a 19th century poet: everyone is really asking the same questions. What, if anything, is eternal? My characters are on their own journeys to answer this question- they will learn that the answer, is love.

Wendy Dubow Polins

Excerpt from the Book

"Archaeology, what is so bloody interesting? You spend your life trying to find things in the past.

"It's the foundation of the world around us."

"Well, it's time to live in the present."

"Don't you feel your past everywhere around you?"

"I don't know."

"Like the roots of a tree, buried deep underground. They're holding you up, feeding you, giving you strength to withstand the wind, the storms, the years."

"And the future, you probably think that's somewhere in your tree too?"

"I can hear it-in the breeze, the sound in the shimmer of the leaves. It's like a promise."

"You can't go through life only believing in music and art, poetry and-"

"And what, Philip?"

"Love."

"Why not. What else is there?"

A Note to Readers from the Author

Dear Reader,

Katia Lief
Katia Lief

A few years ago, when I heard the tragic news of what befell an innocent family in Connecticut during a home invasion by a pair of murderous thugs, I felt so disturbed that I was moved to write a fictional account.

But mine would empower the family and change the ending.  My novel is set at a Thanksgiving gathering because holidays are when relationships tend to be at their most combustible.  And so, when the artistic family in WATERBURY is faced with a team of career criminals, the result is a dangerous battle of wills with a redemptive outcome no one would predict.

Katia Lief

from the Book....

The table was long and white and, covered with bowls and platters of food, even managed to appear festive.  Fiona sat above her empty plate contemplating how that could be possible.  Not how any of this could be possible-not how her family had ended up in this horrendous situation, or how this holiday meal, with violent strangers, could be happening-but specifically how the absurd paradoxes of this moment could possibly coexist:  the appearance of the table and the feeling of familial comfort it naturally evoked set against the reality of the fact that they could all die at any moment.

Praise for Waterbury:

A gripping psychological thriller about a holiday home invasion from Katia Lief, whose international bestsellers Lisa Gardner calls "Mesmerizing" and Richard Montanari calls "Nail-biting suspense."

Dear Reader:

Myths, magic, and monsters - these things and more can be found in KISS OF FROST, the second book in my Mythos Academy young adult urban fantasy series.

KISS OF FROST focuses on Gwen Frost, a seventeen-year-old Gypsy girl with psychometry magic. Gwen is still trying to adjust to life at Mythos Academy, a school for the descendants of ancient warriors like Spartans, Amazons, and Valkyries. Now, a Reaper of Chaos has Gwen in his sights, and she'll have to use her magic to figure out who the bad guy is-and stop him.

Happy reading!

"Look, I'm sorry," Logan said. "I just didn't like seeing you with that other guy."

"You're such a hypocrite. You had no right to come out here and get in the middle of us," I whispered in a fierce voice. "No right at all. Not while you're with Savannah."

"I know."

The seconds stretched out and turned into a minute, then two. Still, he didn't say anything - he just kept looking at me with his blue, blue gaze.

"Kiss me or let me go," I finally said in a miserable voice, hot tears stinging my eyes. "I don't care anymore."

A Note to Readers from the Author

Dear Reader,

Robert Cook
Robert Cook

I have read so many thrillers that I simply had to try to write one or two, and setting up the protagonist is a most-important first step. The main character of Cooch has a brain and he is willing to use it.  He's alsoa bad-ass.  The female protagonist is a foul-mouthed Cal Tech PhD physicist.  It's fun to write about these folks.  To my surprise, I got an eLit Gold Medal for best thriller in an e-book.  I'm hard at work on a sequel.

 Robert Cook

An Excerpt from the Novel

"Who the hell are you, Cuchulain? I think that you're a nice, good-natured guy with a great body and a good mind, who happens to own a bunch of my stock. And God, I was worried that you were a fucking wimp! You're clearly a lot more than that, and a lot of what you seem to be is disturbing to me. I didn't even know that people like you existed; you were like an animal, and your face got really spooky- not that I wasn't glad to have you there tonight, but God, you're not what I thought."

Praise for Cooch:

"Bob Cook has created in Cooch an action hero whose role in life is to define our disgust with those who would prey on our better nature and who brutally prey on anyone who has something they want.   He does a thoughtful job of it and presents the White House environment well, for these purposes."

Arthur H. Allen, US secret Service (Retired)

"Cooch is the new Jack Ryan!  If you've ever worried about the intersection between the wealth of the drug cartels and the ambitions of the transnational terrorists, Bob Cook takes you directly to that place. Novel though it is, COOCH provides dramatic believeability as a depiction of high stakes operations in the post 9/11 security environment we're all still trying to understand."

James Loy, Admiral, US Coast Guard (Retired). Former Commandant, US Coast Guard, former Deputy Secretary, US Dept of Homeland Security

Kelly saw us come in. She had one of her students take over the class and pointed me to her office. She did not look pleased to see us. Kelly stood five foot four in her current barefoot state and wore a black gi and pants on her slender frame. She entered the office behind us and closed the door.

"You got your ass kicked," she said. "Again." She frowned. "You're making me look bad."

"You should see the other guy. Not a scratch on him."

"One man did this to you?" She shook her head. "You're a disgrace."

A Note to Readers, from the Author

Dear Reader,
Rochelle Staab
Rochelle Staab

One of the joys in writing is the research, and writing this novel led me on an unforgettable adventure from tarot classes to voodoo tours. Some of the settings and customs in WHO DO, VOODOO? were inspired by a trip I made to New Orleans where a voodoo priestess gave me a behind the scenes tour of the French Quarter while she delivered a unique, occult version of French Quarter history. We visited cemeteries, sanctuaries, and back rooms of voodoo shops that shocked and stirred my imagination.

An Excerpt from the Novel

The back of my neck tingled. Who was Callia? Linda gazed around the circle. She stopped when she got to me. Her face had changed: the softness drained from her features. She looked tired, older. Her eyes were vacant. A small terror edged my rational mind aside. I had a fleeting sensation that someone else's eyes were staring at me from Linda's face.

"You have to keep my secrets safe and with my family. Your question is answered inside." She held her eyes on mine. "Promise me."

I nodded warily, not knowing what she meant. "I promise."

Praise for Who Do Voodoo?

"Didn't need my crystal ball to see into the future of this wonderful debut.  A sexy, funny, and engaging whodunit set in Tinsel Town, Who do, Voodoo? is a winner."
~ Lesley Kagen, NY Times Bestselling author of Good Graces

"A spellbinding blend of voodoo and tarot traditions, Who Do, Voodoo is a superlative supernatural mystery."
~ Cleo Coyle, author of the national bestselling Haunted Bookshop and Coffeehouse Mysteries

"Whoo hoo! Smart, sophisticated and utterly spellbinding.  This magical mystery is captivatingly clever, completely charming, and compelling from its irresistible beginning to its unpredictable end. (Who do loves it? I do!)"
~ Hank Phillippi Ryan, Agatha, Anthony and Macavity winning author

We've already shipped out six Kindle Fires, and we think there's a chance that one of the Kindle Fire units yet to be shipped has (or will have) your name on it.

But of course we'll never know unless you tap on this link to enter (and keep entering each week):

Good luck with the Kindle Fire sweepstakes, and happy reading with all of this week's Five-Star Fiction selections!
