JOBSRIP Steve Jobs (1955-1984)

As you know, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs died Wednesday after a valiant seven-year battle with pancreatic cancer. Although Kindle Nation and our readers were not always pleased with what Jobs said and did with respect to ebooks, he was a visionary who revolutionized personal computing with the launch of Macintosh in 1984 and continued to transform the lives of people around the world for the next quarter-century with the iPhone, the iPod, the iPad, and the iTunes platform.

There are several worthwhile books about Jobs and his remarkable achievements on the Kindle and Audible.com platforms, and a new authorized biography by Walter Isaacson, Steve Jobs, is eagerly anticipated and has climbed to the very top of the Kindle bestseller list in spite of its pre-order price of $16.99. I hope it can be said without inspiring rancor that neither the book nor its price would be possible if it had not been for Steve Jobs.

SWEEPSTAKESThis is Not a Typo:

Starting This Week, We're Giving Away

10 Kindle Fire Units Between Now and Dec. 25 at http://on.fb.me/WIN-FIRE!

For real.

Regular readers of Kindle Nation know that we've already given away a bunch of Kindles this year. And back in June we held the first Kindle Fire Sweepstakes ever -- we didn't know what it would be called, and we didn't know how much it would cost, but we held a Kindle Fire Sweepstakes and 4,233 of you came. Linda Ronne of Colorado was our winner, and she'll be one of the first people to receive a Kindle Fire, directly from Amazon, on November 16.

We've been having so much fun that we have invited authors to join us in sponsoring more Kindle Fire give-away sweepstakes, and some of our favorite Kindle authors have stepped up already. So, starting this week, on our Kindle Nation Daily Facebook page, we will hold a Kindle Fire Sweepstakes every week from now through the holidays! That's $2,000 worth of Kindle Fires that we will be unleashing -- please don't call the fire department on us!

There's no purchase required, of course, but it is a great way for some of our author-sponsors to get exposure, so we hope you will give some real consideration to buying their books each week when you enter the contest.

The one thing you will have to do to enter is to go over to our Kindle Nation Daily Facebook page, "Like" the page, and fill out the Sweepstakes entry form (you'll see a link to it in the left sidebar when the Sweepstakes goes live).

And just in case you are wondering why we run the Sweepstakes through our Facebook page, there are two very good reasons:
  • First, it allows us to make use of a very professional but affordable third-party service that administers our Sweepstakes according to best practices and maintains full confidentiality for all information provided by participants; and
  • Second, it helps us to build our connection with you, our readers, through Facebook, which is the quickest, least expensive, and least intrusive way for us to let you know about Kindle-related news and bargains.
10 Brand New Kindle Fires! Here's hoping that we will be sending one to you!

And we'll just chalk this up to the luck of the calendar, but it is worth noting here that if you happen to buy a brand new Kindle Fire while you are waiting to win a free unit through our Sweepstakes, you'll have a sweet choice between giving the extra unit to someone you love or returning it to Amazon for a full refund, either directly or through Kindle Nation!

A Kindle Fan's Report from the Front Row
At Amazon's NYC Press Conference, by Len Edgerly

We were very grateful last week when podcaster extraordinaire Len Edgerly of The Kindle Chronicles agreed to live-blog the Kindle Fire/Kindle Touch press conference for Kindle Nation readers. Our gratitude remains, but not it is matched by great admiration for Len's accomplishment in bringing out a short-form Kindle ebook version of his reportage and thoughtful commentary less than a week after the event. It's a worthy addition to every Kindle library, and at 99 cents it will not cut deeply into your Kindle budget.

Here's the set-up, directly from Len:

In this 30-page article, I invite you to join me in the front row at Amazon's press conference in New York city on September 28, 2011. That's when Jeff Bezos introduced the next generation of Kindles, including the Kindle Fire tablet. Just being at the event was a major thrill for a book lover whose life has been changed by the Kindle. I thought I'd seen the future when I bought a Rocket eBook in 1998. That didn't work out too well, but the Kindle in 2007 looked like the real thing.

The next year, I started a weekly podcast, The Kindle Chronicles, to participate in the revolution in reading that I was sure would follow. Since then, I've interviewed 165 people representing all parts of the Kindlesphere--from Amazon executives to nervous writers, from technologists to school administrators, from the editor of the New York Times Book Review to my wife Darlene, who reads three times as many Kindle books as I do but is an endearing skeptic about technology.

I traveled by train to New York City worried that Amazon executives might get so excited about their shiny new color tablet that they would forget to keep improving the monochrome e-ink Kindles. In the event, I need not have worried. Jeff Bezos started the press conference by telling the Kindle story in a way that touched me as highly personal and revealing. Come join me in the front row, and I'll show you what I mean.

It started with the bestselling YA novel, Hush Money, which sold over 10,000 copies in its first six months of publication. Joss Marshall, a girl with a supernatural ability-a Talent-living in a world where supernatural abilities are against the law, won the hearts of readers alongside her long-time crush, Dylan Maxwell.

Be normal, invisible. Don't get close to anyone. Those are the rules to live by for seventeen-year-old Joss. She spent years as an outsider, hoping to hide what she is, until the new girl, Kat, decides she's friend material. Kat doesn't realize her mistake when she stands up for Joss against Marco, a guy who's been giving Joss a hard time since freshman year. Joss is horrified when these heroics lead to the reveal of Kat's Talent. Now she has an unasked-for best friend, who is the victim of an extortion plot by the school bully, who used to like Joss. And if all that weren't complicated enough, Dylan, Joss's long-time crush, is finally starting to talk to her. But as Marco's best friend, can Dylan be trusted at all? Can Joss keep her secret and still save her friend? And what's more important, staying safe or doing what's right?

Hush Money is a fast-paced read, full of page-turning surprises, available for Kindle for $0.99.

by Susan Bischoff
4.9 stars - 18 Reviews

The much-anticipated sequel, Heroes 'Til Curfew, is now available for Kindle as well.

Joss's and Dylan's relationships evolves with tenderness and sensual awareness as the two seemingly very different teens learn that they're more alike than either would have guessed. But as more Talents are imprisoned by the government, everyone's looking for a leader. Some look to Joss, some to her worst enemy, Marco, whose lust for money and power combines with his vendetta against the couple in a criminal plot that attracts the attention of outside forces and threatens Joss's family, friends, and residents of the town of Fairview. Joss wants to stand up to Marco, but Dylan's protective instincts are putting him in harm's way. As the stakes get higher, can Joss find a way to embrace both the boy and her hero within?

Heroes 'Til Curfew is an engrossing story packed with action, drama, and romance, available for Kindle for $2.99.

FIREThings You Should Know About the New Kindle Fire

Seattle Times technology columnist Brier Dudley did a helpful interview recently with Amazon.com Kindle Vice President Dave Limp, from which we were able to glean the following useful tidbits:
  • Despite all the speculation that Amazon is selling the Kindle Fire at a loss, Limp seemed to contradict that notion when he said "We need to try to make money off both devices and services and do that in a way that's sustainable. That's what we owe to our shareholders and we continue to do it."
  • Unlike a totally closed tablet like the iPad, the Kindle Fire will allow us to load our own files via the USB: "We don't think people are going to do it very often; we haven't optimized for that use. But if you plug it into a PC or Mac, folders will show up and you can drag files onto it."
  • The Kindle Fire will allow you to enjoy any DRM-free content that you can upload to the cloud: " I uploaded my entire iTunes library. It's got to be DRM [digital rights management] free. ... I moved it to the cloud and then it's all visible on the device," said Limp.
  • The Fire will include an onboard gallery app for showing photographs, and what Limp called a "desktop-class PDF reader."
  • Among others, there will be apps from Netflix, Pandora, Facebook and Twitter.
  • Limp left the door wide open to the possibility that we might see a Kindle Fire with Special Offers at a lower price point in the future by saying "nothing to announce today" when asked a direct question on that topic, but from another source we have a very interesting piece of news that kind of runs in the other direction: for $30, customers who want to unsubscribe to Special Offers on their new $79 Kindle (or Kindle 4) will be able to do so. Smart policy on Amazon's part, because it will remove many customers' resistance to trying out the Special Offers discount in the first place. $30 is of course the amount of the original discount. If it works on the $79 Kindle we'd expect to see it extended to the Kindle Touch when that unit ships November 22.
You can read Limp's report on the entire interview at http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/businesstechnology/2016348867_brieramazonqa29.html

Announcing Our New Thriller of the Week:

This week, Gunnar Bloom's The Last Ride of the Ugly Bus is here to sponsor lots of great free Mystery/Thriller titles in the Kindle store!

by Gunnar Bloom
4.5 stars - 2 Reviews

Here's the set-up:

In this provocative tale of adolescent misbehavior, a cunning high school senior masterminds a suburban heist by manipulating and terrorizing the revelers at a graduation party where eight unlucky guests deemed the "ugliest" of the night are subjected to a ritual of sadistic bullying and humiliation before being sent packing aboard the host's notorious "Ugly Bus."

As shocking as it is riveting, THE LAST RIDE OF THE UGLY BUS is a contemplative neo noir thriller that will grip you with its no-punches-pulled exploration of cruelty, morality and forgiveness set amidst a milieu of privileged misfits on the cusp of adulthood. After experiencing the story's relentlessly-paced darkness and devastation - think Stieg Larsson meets Bret Easton Ellis - you may never look at teenagers the same way again.

Kindle Nation Bargain Book Alert: "What if fame happened to you?" - ROCK STAR'S GIRL by J.F. Kristin - 4.6 Stars and Just 99 Cents on Kindle!

What if fame happened to you?

That's the question posed by J.F. Kristin in today's guest post....

What if fame happened to you?

When I was eighteen, I began doing freelance work for rock bands and other artists as a promotional writer and web designer. Over time, I made many friends and acquaintances who were musicians, then met some of their friends who were also musicians, and so the circle grew. Some of these great folks belonged to independent bands, and others belonged to more well-known acts with a fan following.

It's strange to get a glimpse of being on the inside looking out, even second-hand through someone you know who has experienced fame. What would you do if you knew that strangers discussed you, the things you've said or done, who you're involved with, and even the clothes you've worn?

I've had friends make the argument that if you opt for a career in the spotlight, then it comes with the territory. My own argument typically advocates privacy. After all, we're all simply human beings with a right to our lives.

The debate, though, did bring another question to mind. What if through no career choice of your own, fame happened to you? What if overnight, your life was suddenly on display for the world?

From this question, my novel Rock Star's Girl was born. It explores what happens when overnight celebrity comes unexpectedly, and then goes horribly wrong.

Thank you, and I hope you enjoy the book.

-J.F. Kristin

Rock Star's Girl

by J.F. Kristin, aka Jennifer Farwell
4.6 stars - 5 Reviews

Here's the set-up:

Emily Watts just wants a weekend break from the workaholic hours she's taken on to keep her business - a popular fashion-snark web site - up and running. What she gets is overnight celebrity and a career-killing media scandal. While taking time out to attend a concert in support of friend Jesse Cinder, a struggling musician, Emily meets Cory Sampson, the lead singer of a chart-topping rock band. When she agrees to a date with Cory, making entertainment headlines is the last thing she expects. Even so, it's a minor surprise by comparison to her discovery that in the music world, media notoriety trumps all. Tabloid allegations erupt when Cory and fame-hungry Jesse use Emily for personal gain, and her tarnished image spells disaster - personally and professionally. To save the web site and writing career she's made her life and dream, Emily must go from being a pawn in the Hollywood headline game to becoming the media mastermind.

What readers are saying about Rock Star's Girl:

"I can't recommend this book enough. If you are a fan of the music scene or ever just wondered 'what if' about a rock star, this is going to grab your attention and hold it from page one through the end." -Just Jump review
"The book made me laugh and cry and I just couldn't put it down until I finished it. Would I recommend this to a friend? Absolutely! I recommend what I love and I truly loved this. I would give it 5 of 5 stars, not only for the excellent writing but for the lesson on not believing everything you read in the gossip column." -My Life, My Randomness review
"Rock Star's Girl is a compelling, entertaining and amusing read. If you're in the mood for some light-hearted romance with a smart and savvy edge, I encourage you to pick it up. But be forewarned - it's difficult to put down." -Amazon review
"Great book! Very enjoyable. Read it in one sitting flying from SLC to MEM ... I want to know HOW much of the book was real and WHO the muso was." -Amazon review"The ending surprised me, but I liked it. It's not what you'd usually expect and it was refreshing ... if you're like me and you love storylines that involve Hollywood, celebrities, rock stars and actors you'll enjoy this book." -Goodreads review

"A few years ago Hollywood gave us a movie about what women want. Patricia Sands has written a book about how women think."
Peter McNeilly

Here's the set-up:

"For more than forty years, the mantra of the eight women in the Bridge Club has been "one for all and all for one." Beginning their monthly soiree in the psychedelic Sixties, unpredicted twists of fate weave through the good times and strong friendship they share as the years pass. The constant from one decade to the next is loyal and nonjudgmental support, even when agreeing to disagree is the final solution. From the exhilarating cultural changes of their early times together through the "zoomer" years, their connection never falters.

As they celebrate turning sixty (give or take a year) at a group birthday weekend, each woman recalls a challenging time in her life when the Bridge Club came to the rescue. After tossing around ideas mixed with a generous helping of common sense and a large dose of laughter they decide to refer to that time as their "SOS". Eight chapters document each one's story.

Everything is put into perspective and the strength of their friendship is truly tested when one of these women faces a life-altering decision. Her choice profoundly affects all members of the group, pushing the limits of their beliefs and values. The unique alliance they share is confronted with a crisis none of them might have imagined."
