It's Not Easy Being Green
Air for Four. Three of the more significant challenges that humanity faces are; the need to preserve existing green space, renew green space that has been destroyed by development and create new green space where it was not previously thought possible in order to continue to enjoy the benefits of an 'urban forest'. Two of the most important aspects of this urban forest are energy conservation and carbon dioxide absorption. Trees intercept rainfall and reduce run-off, thereby functioning like retention/detention basins. Properly located and managed, trees can reduce the demand for fossil energy through effects such as shading buildings to reduce air conditioning demand and breaking winter winds and lower space heating costs.

Studies show that hospital patients with window views of trees recovered significantly faster and with fewer complications than comparable patients without access to such views. The Lancet published a study that concluded that even tiny green spaces near where people live made a big difference to their risk of fatal diseases, especially heart disease and stroke. Each healthy tree can reduce air borne dust particles by as much as 7,000 particles per litre of air, thus a healthy tree is a free standing air conditioner and purifier.
Keeping our world green in order that we can enjoy all the benefits, is a challenge indeed and contributing to this green project is rewarding.

Site Visit~Biason and Millstone Channels Channel Re-alignment
In 2006 HCL began the re-alignment of part of the Indian Creek in Milton, Ontario.
The project included construction of a temporary diversion channel, excavation of the channel, installation of riverstone, riffles, live fascines, willow stakes and planting of 4,829 trees and over 25,000 shrubs.
77,025 SQM of TerraSeeding of Native Meadow Seed and Native Wet Meadow Seed Mix were also installed.
After three years the channel is well established.

During the same year, construction began in Oakville on the Millstone Channel. Although not quite as large, this channel also involved bio-engineering work including construction of a temporary diversion channel, low flow channel, channel thalweg, deep pool, root wad revetment, shallow pools and riffles. The project was completed with topsoil installation, planting and TerraSeeding of 16,000 SQM. |

Mulch is a beneficial addition to trees and planting beds as it retains moisture and assists in weed control. Hermanns shredded pine mulch is a superior product ground to our specifications at our yard in Schomberg, Ontario. The mulch is a dark brown/red colour and has a strong pine aroma which makes it a desirable addition to any landscape. Over time, mulch decomposes and adds nutrients to the soil as it breaks down. With mulch top up applications plant material continues to benefit from the properties of the mulch itself as well as from the addition to the soil. Hermanns produces, sells and installs approximately 68,000 cubic yards of mulch during one planting season.
