High School Students Apprehended by Immigration Officials During a
Trolley Raid to Return to the US, Reunify with Parents

San Diego, CA - Nearly a month since the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) launched a controversial immigration raid in the Old Town Trolley stations, which led to the apprehension of 21 people, including three teenagers on their way to school, the minors will be returned to the United States on humanitarian grounds.
The May 20th joint operation led by the U.S. Border Patrol and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) prompted strong condemnation by educators, students and community advocates.
In an exceptional turn of events, DHS officials announced that three high school students will be granted humanitarian visas and will be allowed to reunify with their families; they are expected to present their case before an immigration judge at a future date.
Advocates urge law enforcement officials to ensure that the special care is given to minors to ensure protection of their rights and dignity. Furthermore, this case presents an opportunity for immigration authorities to re-evaluate and improve on the policies dictating how children should be treated and questioned for immigration purposes. The American Friends Service Committee will continue to work to improve policies addressing detention of minors in immigration raids.
"No matter where you stand on the immigration debate in this country, children should be free to go to school without the fear of being deported. We are pleased with the decision of the federal government to allow these three students to come back home - it is a step in the right direction," stated Pedro Rios, director of the American Friends Service Committee.

San Diego, CA - A casi un mes desde que el Departamento de Seguridad Nacional de los Estados Unidos efectuara una redada en las instalaciones del tren ligero (trolley) de San Diego, que resultara en la detención de 21 personas, incluyendo a tres menores, estudiantes de high school (preparatoria) regresan a los Estados Unidos después de ser repatriados a Tijuana.
El operativo que fue encabezado por la Patrulla Fronteriza y la Administración de Seguridad de Transporte (TSA) el pasado 20 de mayo en la terminal de Old Town del tren ligero (trolley) propició el repudio generalizado del magisterio, el estudiantado y miembros de la comunidad.
Hoy el gobierno federal de los Estados Unidos anunció que otorgará visas humanitarias a los estudiantes repatriados y este miércoles 17 de junio ingresaran a los Estados Unidos para reunificarse con sus familias y ventilar sus respectivos casos ante las cortes de inmigración.
Defensores de los Derechos Humanos insisten que los gobiernos tienen la obligación de proteger los derechos humanos y la dignidad de niños y adolescentes durante las redadas de migración. Este caso deja en evidencia la urgente necesidad que los gobiernos de ambos países revisen las políticas de protección a menores y se establezcan garantías para su protección.
"El derecho a estudiar es universal, ningún estudiante debe de tener el temor de ser deportado mientras se dirige al salón de clases, la decisión del gobierno federal de permitirle a los adolescentes regresar a casa es un paso importante," aseveró Pedro Ríos, director del Comité.
