FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 7, 2009 - 9 A.M.

The Supreme Court is expected to issue a decision on June 15 on whether or not it will hear the appeal of the Cuban Five. The Obama Administration has filed a brief urging the Court to deny the Five a hearing. The Cuban Five are Political Prisoners unjustly held in U.S. prisons on trumped up charges. They were in the U.S. to defend the people of Cuba from terrorist attacks launched from Miami, Florida.

The call for a press conference and speak out registers international opinion. For the seventh consecutive year, the U.N. General Assembly overwhelmingly calls for end to the United States Economic Embargo against Cuba. 185 countries voted in favor to immediately end the criminal embargo. The rejection of U.S. foreign policy in the recent declaration of the Organization of American States in Honduras deepens further U.S. isolation. Cuba and its wonderful people are not our enemy and never have been.

Participants include: S. D. Coalition To Free Mumia Abu Jamal, Bayan Phillipino Youth, Raza Rights Coalition-Project of Union del Barrio, Gay Activists, Leonard Peltier Defense Committee, Cuba Si,  Chicano Mechas, Activist San Diego, academics, labor, workers, religious groups, and others.

After centuries of violent inequality and repression, a dozen years of armed struggle against a brutal, U.S.-backed military, and two decades of rule by the right-wing ARENA party, the Salvadoran people elected the first leftist president in their country's history on March 15th, 2009. President Mauricio Funes of the FMLN took office on June 1st, bringing El Salvador into a growing community of Latin America nations seeking to chart their own, independent economic and political course. Learn the influence and power the organized social movement played in this election and how united parents, teachers, students, union workers, vendors and whole communities organized and became militant in order to defend their vote... and defeated the ARENA party!  With our communities being attack by the police, ICE raids, unfair and unjust immigration laws, and with our children being affected by the cuts to education, the TIME TO ACT IS NOW!!! We need to unite!

Join CISPES and Unión del Barrio to learn about the platform, plans, and strategy of the new FMLN
government...and the role the social movements in El Salvador

...and what WE can do in the U.S. to support the strengthening of REAL democracy in El Salvador,  and defend our communities!

Please disseminate as widely as possible.

On Sat. June 20th, 2009, the Chicano Mexicano Prison Project (CMPP) will be organizing its annual conference/summit on the question of "Raza Prisoners and Colonialism." The conference will be held in Los Angeles, Califaztlan.

Under the theme of "Todos Somos Prisioneros (We Are All Prisoners), the objectives of the conference will be:

1. To provide Raza activists an opportunity to share and learn from each other, the role that capitalism and colonialism play in the mass incarceration of Raza.

2. To network and unite prisoner rights activists/workers as a way of building a movement that can really challenge those institutions that oppress and exploit our communities.

3. To expose the terror and brutality faced by Mexican/Raza prisoners in the capitalist-colonial prisons of the United States.

The conference will include a panel-presentation of activists and a "circulo de discusion" (discussion circle) where everyone attending will have a voice in finding solutions to the colonial oppression of our communities and the mass incarceration of Mexican/Raza men, women, and children. The CMPP's aim is to create a revolutionary response to the racist-colonialist imprisonment of our people; one that opposes the policies of the ruling class and upholds the interests of the majority of our community -the workers and the poor.

If you are tired of reformist reactions to the daily oppression and racism faced by our communities, then this is the conference for you attend.

Share, Learn, and Struggle.  Join us on June 20th, 2009.
