and teachers of deported youths will be available to express their
alarm regarding raids that tear families apart.
San
Diego, CA - On Friday, May 22, 2009 the parents of
three local high school students who were detained yesterday while at
the Old Town Trolley Station during a joint operation involving
Border Patrol and Transportation Security Administration (TSA)
officers will speak out. At least 21 people were detained, including
three minors who have since been deported.
The
American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) has interviewed witnesses
as well as family members who have been in touch with the minors, and
they have stated that agents engaged in racial profiling in order to
question patrons of the Trolley.
In
past years, similar operations by the Border Patrol were used as
training opportunities for new recruits. "This type of
operation foments fear and distrust of law enforcement agents,"
stated Pedro Rios, director of the San Diego
AFSC office. "The Trolley should be a safe place for
students and workers - there is absolutely no justification for
detaining minors and separating them from their families,"
Rios continued. TSA and Border Patrol officials have not been
responsive to AFSC calls requesting an explanation for this
operation.
Later
in the evening, community members will rally at 5 PM at the
Trolley Central Office, 1255 Imperial Avenue, San Diego, 92101

Diego, CA -22 de mayo Padres de familia, maestros se
darán cita en las oficinas del Comité de Amigos (AFSC,
por sus siglas en inglés) para denunciar en conferencia de
prensa el operativo que efectuaron la Patrulla Fronteriza y la
Administración de Seguridad de Transporte (TSA) en una
concurrida estación del tren ligero de esta ciudad. Las dos
agencias federales, que dependen del Departamento de Seguridad
Nacional, cuestionaron a usuarios del tren ligero en Old Town, justo
al norte del centro de la ciudad. Al menos 21 personas fueron
detenidas, incluyendo tres estudiantes menores de edad que iban rumbo
a su escuela. Los tres menores, cuyas edades oscilan entre los 15 y
17 años fueron deportados la tarde de ayer y se encuentran ya
en la ciudad de Tijuana, .
En
2002, la comunidad de San Diego encabezó varias movilizaciones
para frenar operativos de esta naturaleza en el tranvía,
logrando la suspensión de los mismos para 2003, debido a que
los operativos eran utilizados como adiestramiento para nuevos
reclutas de las autoridades migratorias.
"El
tranvía debe de ser un forma de transportarse de manera segura
para los usuarios, en especial para los estudiantes - estas
corporaciones están fomentando el temor entre la población,"
aseveró el director del Comité, Pedro Ríos.
Hasta
la fecha, oficiales del TSA y de la Patrulla Fronteriza no han
respondido a llamadas del Comité solicitando una explicación
de la redada.
La
comunidad convoca a un mitin de protesta es viernes 22 de mayo a las
5 PM frente a las instalaciones del Sistema de Trolley, 1255 Imperial
Avenue.

A Yolanda Martínez y familia
Al pueblo y las comunidades de San Diego
Con gran dolor y respeto y en nombre de Unión del Barrio entregamos
nuestras más sinceras condolencia a Yolanda Martínez y su familia por
la perdida de su esposo y compañero Roberto Martínez.
Debemos decir que esta perdida no es sólo para Yolanda y la familia
Martínez sino que para toda la comunidad de San Diego. Por muchos años
Roberto luchó por que se respetaran los derechos humanos a las
comunidades migrantes que viven y trabajan en estas tierras
fronterizas. Por muchos años Roberto trabajó y colaboró con nuestra
organización, desarrollando estrechos lazos entre él, el AFSC y Unión
del Barrio.
El día de ayer se apagó una voz. Estamos tranquilos porque sabemos que
el legado de Roberto ya esta en buenas manos. El legado de paz,
justicia y dignidad, que con tanta determinación defendió Roberto, Ya
esta en cientos de voces. Unión del Barrio continuará luchando para
que este clamor siga siendo escuchado.
Estamos al lado de Yolanda y la familia Martínez en estos momentos de
dolor por esta perdida irreparable para ellos y para nuestra comunidad.

To the Raza Community and the San Diego community,
With great sadness and respect, Unión del Barrio extends our sincerest
condolences to Yolanda Martinez and family, for the irreparable loss of
her husband Roberto Martinez.
We must say that this loss is not only a loss for Yolanda and the
Martinez family, but also a loss to the entire San Diego community. For
many years Roberto struggled to ensure that the Human Rights of migrant
communities- that live and work on the borderlands and beyond- be
recognized and respected. For many years, Roberto worked and
collaborated with our organization, developing extensive ties between
the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) and Unión del Barrio.
On yesterday, we lost a firm voice of justice. We are confident,
however, that the legacy of Roberto lives on. That legacy of peace,
justice and dignity, that Roberto so valiantly defended, today is
carried on by the hundreds. Unión del Barrio makes a commitment to
continue to ensure that the clamor of Roberto's legacy continue to be
heard.
We are with Yolanda and family in these dificult times for this irrepreable loss for them and for our community.
