For the past 5 years Somos Raza, the youth and student project of Unión del Barrio, has helped organized the Zapata March in observance of the death of General Emiliano Zapata. This is a collaborative effort  brings together the youth and student sectors of San Diego in an effort to stand in struggle with our communities all while honoring the legacy of one of the great heroes of our people.

With the support of M.E.Ch.A. from SDSU and various other campuses, as well as youth and community collectives,  the Zapata March continues the example of mobilizing our communities to continue our struggle for freedom, dignity and self determination.

Initially the Zapata March was conceived as the contribution of the youth and student sectors to support the demand of placing the statute of Emiliano Zapata that now graces our beloved Chicano Park. Now that the community was able to fight back the opposition of the placing of the monument to our hero in our people's park, the Zapata March has now become our affirmation, as youth and students that we stand with our people in struggle.

In this years' march we will be bringing attention to the
·    Continuous terrorist ICE Raid attacks on our community.
·     Increased militarization on the U.S.-Mexico Border and our schools.
·     Recent savage attacks on our brothers and sisters in Gaza in Palestine.
·     Massive job layoffs during the current economic crisis.

As youth and students we understand that our role is to stand with our communities, so that we never detach our selves from our people, collectively organize and struggle for the right of our people to self-determination, and in doing so honoring the legacy of Emiliano Zapata.

Durante los últimos cinco años, Somos Raza, el proyecto de la juventud y los estudiantes de Unión del Barrio, ha venido organizando la Marcha por Zapata con el motivo de honrar la memoria del General Emiliano Zapata. Este esfuerzo se realiza en colaboración con los diversos sectores que agrupan a la juventud y los estudiantes de la ciudad de San Diego, con la intención de sumar nuestra energía a las luchas de nuestras comunidades y al hacerlo seguir el legado de uno de los principales héroes de nuestro pueblo.

Con el apoyo de M.E.Ch.A de SDSU y de otros planteles, así cómo diversos colectivos juveniles y estudiantiles, la Marcha por Zapata continúa con el ejemplo de movilización para promover la lucha por la libertad, la dignidad y la libre determinación.

Inicialmente la Marcha por Zapata se llevó a cabo para mostrar la el apoyo de la juventud y los estudiantes para apoyar la exigencia de nuestra comunidad de colocar un monumento en honor a Emiliano Zapata en el Parque Chicano, la estatua se levanta hoy altiva sobre nuestro querido parque. Ahora que nuestra comunidad pudo hacer cumplir su exigencia de que se colocara el monumento a Zapata en el parque del pueblo, la Marcha por Zapata es hoy  nuestro compromiso, como jóvenes y estudiantes para sumarnos y contarnos entre la lucha de nuestro pueblo.

Este año la marcha denunciará:

·    La agresión terrorista del ICE a nuestras comunidades por medio de las redadas
·    La militarización de la frontera Estados Unidos-México y de nuestras escuelas
·    La agresión brutal a nuestros hermanas y hermanos palestinos en Gaza
·    El despido masivo de trabajadores debido a la crisis económica

Como jóvenes y estudiantes nos comprometemos a luchar hombro a hombro con nuestras comunidades para nunca separarnos de nuestro pueblo y luchar colectivamente por el derecho a la libre determinación y al hacerlo honrar el legado de Emiliano Zapata.
