If you can't meet the April filing deadline to file your tax return, you can get an automatic six month extension of time to file from the IRS.
Here is what you need to know about filing an extension:
If you are getting a refund there is no filing deadline. April 15th means nothing to you! However, you would obviously want to file as quick as possible to get your refund. Also, if you wait more than three years to file your return and you are owed money, the IRS will keep it.
You only need to file a return or an extention if you owe money. The extention is only an extention to file, not an extention to pay. You must pay 90% of what is due or you will face penalties and interest.
Best Regards,
