After seven months of rehearsals via skype and six weeks of intense live rehearsals with Samar back in New York, the shape of our newest evening length piece, Bound, is beginning to emerge.
Thanks to the work of set designer Nolan O'Bryan, we have the framework of what will eventually become a finished set: three multipurpose walls that frame and obstruct the action on stage. As a dancer it is a massive shift to be contained by such structures; we who thrive on open space and freedom of movement. And it is a great reminder for all of us of what the piece is about: a reflection on occupation and the realities of those bound by cultural, geographical and political borders (and when taken in this light, these walls don't seem so bad afterall). As with any multimedia collaboration, no one aspect tells the story in it's entirety; it is only when all of the pieces come together that the story makes sense. In this spirit we turn again to the loaded language of our title: we are bound by the set and logistical considerations; and still we bound toward our destination and our vision. Soon it will be a return to Skype where the dancers will fine-tune the choreography, and artists in Ramallah will work with Samar to finish the score and edit video. We probably won't have all the pieces together until Samar comes back for the show in October, when we hope that you will join us for the premiere of Bound (October 21-22, 7:30pm at the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center Mainstage Theater).
