YSDT IN THE MIDDLE EAST

YSDT posterNext month Choreographer and Artistic Director Samar Haddad King leads her New York City based company Yaa Samar! Dance Theatre to their second international tour as representatives of the United States in festivals of the Middle East. From April 25 - May 7, 2010 YSDT will participate in the Amman International Dance Festival Zakharef in Motion and Ramallah Contemporary Dance Festival. As the only American company to return for a repeat engagement with both festivals, this New York based group has already garnered national and international attention for their athletic, dramatic and thought-provoking performances that often incorporate both Arab and American themes.
In addition to their festival engagements which feature the Middle East premiere of The Store, YSDT will offer a children's  performance program geared towards school children in and outside of metropolitan areas, university performances, and a professional development workshop aimed at providing creative tools to local dancers and musicians. Children's shows include the Middle East premieres of Skirt Dance and Ramblings of a Young Girl and the world premiere of 25 Steps.

NYC SHOWING April 3, 7:30pm THE STORE

Samar Headshot Join us for an informal showing of work to be featured in our 2010 international tour on Saturday, April 3rd at 8pm! The Store is an evening length dance theater piece that offers an intimate glimpse into the lives of six strangers bound together by oneunforeseen and tragic event. Both touching and comical, the stories of these six individuals are told through a series of tangential, stream-of-consciousness and free association narratives interwoven with multimedia vignettes of solo, duet and ensemble material. Featuring dance and video layered with an original soundscape including hip hop, indie rock, flamenco and Arab music, these six stories are simultaneously seen and heard, revealing the complexities of the characters, their relationships, and human nature itself. Drawing on King's athletic, off-balance and highly emotive signature movement style, YSDT  looks beyond stereotypes to reveal what lies at the heart of human relationships with unparalleled whit and insight.

Performed by: Natasha Diamond-Walker, Josiah Guitian, Kristin Osler, Zoe Rabinowitz, Katie Schetlick, Stephanie Sutherland and Nathan Trice.
Text written by: Samar Haddad King, edited by Sean King and Zoe Rabinowitz
